- New Coffee Shop Opened In Coral Hotel Further Expansion Planned By Owner Of Coral Hotel The Coral Coffee Shop, Key West’s newest sisal ant, opened this week across from the Post Office. The new coffee shop is just off the lobby of the Coral Hotel and is owned and operated by the owner of the Coral Hotel, Francis Ramo Cusumano. He bought the Coral Hotel, $12 Simonton Street, last March from Bernie C. Papy for $68,000. At that time, Cusumano, president of the Bio-Ramo Drug Go., Inc., of Baltimore, said he would: put in a coffee shop. He also completely remodeled and tefurnished the Coral Hotel, one of Key West’s first fine apart- ment hotels. He already has plans for further expansion. Next year, he said, the hotel will expand into the space presently oc- cupied by the Florida State Em- ployment office next door to the hotel. “We will put in a dining room,” Cusumano said today, “specializing in steaks and chops.” The new coffee shop, decorated in white and gleaming yellow, seats 45 persons. It is open from 6 a. m. to 10 p. m. daily. Mr. and Mrs. Dan Sullivan ma- Regularly $4.58 GAL. White Paint $2.99 Monroe Specialty Co. 1930 FLAGLER AVE. The 24 apartments in the ‘build- ing — 10 efficiencies and 14 full- size apartments — have been com- pletely renovated and refurnished. Cusumano ordered this work done as he took over the hotel. The job cost him about $25,000. “The hotel has been completely filled for the past two months,” Cusumano said, “and we are look- ing forward to an excellent win- tet season.” The head of the drug firm com- mutes between Baltimore and Key West and is using this city as a springboard for the mn “of his drug business in Latin Ameri- ca. * He was in Port au Prince, Haiti, on business when Hurricane Hazel battered the island. He was stopping at the Splendid Hotel in Port au Prince and to entertain the guests while the hur- Ticane was blowing, Cusumano sang. He is a former opera singer, hav- ing been leading tenor with the Baltimore Civic Opera Company. At present, Cusumano has plans te establish branches of his drug business in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and in Haiti. Plans call for the establishment of a drug manufacturing plant in the Dominican Republic and a branch to do research into tropi- cal diseases in Haiti. Paris Population Passes 5 Million PARIS (#—Paris and its imme- diate suburbs have passed the five million mark in population, accord- ing to final results now in from the census of last spring. The city itself now has 2,850,159 residents, a slight increase over the 2,725,374 counted in 1946, The 80 communities in the Seine De- partment bring, it to 5,154,834— well over the pre-World, War II total of 4,962,967 in 1936. Although suburbs like Neuilly or Le Bourget have separate local governments, they all look like part of Paris to the casual observer. | Biggest increases have come in the outlying districts. S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals has taken under advisement a legal move designed to halt plans for the saie of the bankrupt Florida East Coast ake in the lengthy legal contest is railroad property stretch- ing from North Florida to Miami. Regardless of what the Circuit Court decides, an appeal likely will be taken to the U. S. Supreme Court. In the latest court maneuver the Atlantic Coast Line seeks to wrest control of the FEC from Florida du Pont interests through a mer- ger. Subsequently the late Judge Louie W. Strum of the Jacksonville Fla., federal bench ordered trans- fer of the iC to an equity re- eeiver, opening the way for a sale. Attorney Protests Edward Bourne, attorney for ACL, contended Thursday the Court of Appeals should overrule Strum. He said the judges could do so without being in conflict with the Supreme Court decision. He said FEC stockholders are in favor of a merger and that it would not be a forced move. William D. Mitchell, representing | holders of the FEC’s first and re funding bonds, argued against the | merger plan. He asked that Judge Strum’s ruling, which character- | ized the proposed merger as un- fair and detrimental to the public interest, be upheld. Key Issue One of the key issues is whether the actual interests of the FEC | are to be taken from the view of | the bond holders who favor a sale, | or of the stockholders, who—ac- | cording to the ACL—favor a me:- ger. The ACL contended that if Judge Strum’s ruling is upheld and a sale is allowed the FEC willbe forced into a stifling receivership aa will not cure its financial ills.
