Detective Charles P. Annerino, 30, was shot near the heart by! Gus Amedeo, 26, whom he had sought to arrest. Annerino slumped to the floor but fired one shot at the fleeing fugitive. He died an hour later at a hospital. Annerino’s partner William Murphy, lunged at the gunman as he attempted: to flee. But after a brief struggle, Amedeo broke free and fled through the front door- way. He collided with a third de- tective, John Bosquette, who said he was unable to hold Amedeo. Murphy and Bosquette chased the gunman and emptied their re- volvers at him before he dis- appeared through a passageway. Murphy said -he heard Amedeo gasp as if wounded. _ Annerino was ranked as a hero in the police department. The President was dye back in Washington after a brief flight from ‘New York, where he inter- spersed active political campaign- ing . with two “nonpolitical” speeches. In the second of these last night, the President told a dinner honor- ing the memory of the late Alfred E. Smith ‘that he plans to resyb- mit to the new Congress his health reinsurance program, which was shelved by the GOP-led 83rd Con- gress. Eisenhower termed “‘the logical alternative to socialized medicine” his program which calls for gov- ernment guarantees of up to 75 per cent of the losses suffered by private and nonprofit insurance firms through voluntary expansion of their health and medical pro- grams. The President spent a good part of yesterday boosting the candi- dacies of Sen. Irving Ives, who °s seeking the. governorship of New York, and Clifford P. Case, who is running for the Senate in New Jersey.
