f , Political Campaign Is Hotter But Voters Still Seem Calm By ED CREAGH WASHINGTON W®—The _ politi. eal campaign is getting hotter. The candidatee are raising their voices and extending their cruis- ing range. But what do the voters think about all the shouting? Until recently, at least, they fave taken it with remarkable Some political professionals, ad- mittedly with an ax to grind, sa: this apathy has been sloughing o in the past few days: The Republicans say President Eisenhower’s Oct. 8 call for a GOP Congress gave their campaign a shot in the arm. The Democrats say the only apathy they find is among Republicans. Associated Press political re- porters touring the country, how- ever, find there still is no hot public interest in the campaign— whatever its final 2% weeks may bring —. except here and there, where special iss"es or unusual situations have arisen. “The 1954 campac. is a play without a villain and the comedy isn’t even good slapstick,” says the AP’s Don. Whitehead. “The Politicians are working hard to keep the audience awake, but everybody seems pretty sure noth- ing exciti-- - ~ happen in the ‘ mext act either.” . beer Much the .....e appraisal—voter WORN OUT? Privately, and sometimes public- ly, many political professionals agree with Whitehead’s appraisal, written frem Louisville, Ky.: “So far as I can see there isn’t a compélling issue or pérsonality | around to get the mass of voters | excited. Business generally is good. There’s no war. Nobody seems to be very mad about anything, un- less it’s a man who's out of a job.” Sen. Sparkman (D-Ala), Demo- cratic viee presidential candidate imma 952, last night disputed Wilson’s claim that “left wing opponents” had twisted his remarks, Sparkman said Wilson’s exact words ‘‘do the damage. No interpretation is needed.” Republican Gov. William G. Stratton said he did not believe the incident would have any bear- ings on Republican fortunes in the congressional elections, now less than three weeks away. Stratton was one of a number of Republi- cans who—like some Democrats and labor union leaders—critieized the defense secretary after his news conference remarks. In Detroit, CIO president Walter Reuther said he was “pleased to learn that Mr. Wilson recognizes that he made a serious mistake.” The situation took something of a twist yesterday when—after an anonymous tipster phoned news of- fices in Washington—a check of Senate Labpr Committee records Showed Reuther had used the figure of speech “‘stir the animals up” in testimony last January against an administration proposal for govern- ment sponsored polls of workers on the ‘question of striking. A CIO spokesman said later a reading of the testimony “will clearly show” Reuther was “‘plead- ing against a return of the law of the jungle and the spirit of the jungle in collective bargaining.” There was a new devélopment in the New Jersey senatorial race last night. The Republican nomi- nee, ford P. Case, canceled three appeatances for the evening without tion, This followed a round of confer- ences with top GOP officials. It also camé in the wake of a story in Thursday editions of the Newark Star-Ledger quoting Bella V. Dodd, a former high Communist party of- ficial, as saying she once knew an Adelaide Case in several groups which rtedly were Red fronts. Miss was quoted further as saying the woman was not a Com- munist party member. Miss Dodd told newsmen after the story appeared she did not know whether the Adelaide Case she referred to was related to the senatorial candidate. Case, whose sister is named Ade- laide, said in a statement “‘this is gutter politics at its worst.” The New York Herald-Tribune quoted what it ,called a ranking Republican 9s saying “there is a strong possibility this is a case of mistaken identity.” Case’s Democratic opponent, Rep. Charles R. Howell, said in a statement. “I won't tolerate any back street campaign in New Jer- sey.” Large Scale Relief Work On In Haiti PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti w— The United States, Britain and several Caribbean countries pushed big scale relief operations in southwestern Haiti today in the wake of Hurricane Hazel’s terrific battering. Adm. Edmund B. Taylor, in charge of the U.S. emergency aid program, described the situation as desperate in some parts of the island’s ravaged southwestern pen- insula. The most immediate need was for food, pure drinking water and medical supplies for inocula- tions to prevent epidemics. Mofe than 100 persons were re- ported killed by the storm which hit in full fury Tuesday but cas- ualty tolls were still fragmentary today because of disrupted com- murications and the remoteness of the area. Some settlements were said to have been swept away without a trace. Eighteen helicopters from the U.S. aircraft carrier Saipan hov- ered over the stricken area to sur- vey the damage, drop supplies and pick up the injured. Air Force C119 Flying Boxcars were put into service hauling food and equipment from the U.S. Naval Base at Guan- tanamo Bay, Cuba. As the sun broke through yéster- day, air flights showed roads washed out and blocked by up- rooted trees, vast stretches of ruined crops and considerable dead livestock — indicating that months of hardship are ahead for survivors of the storm. Many villages were demolished but towns fared better.
