THE Saturday, October 9, 1954 KEY WEST CITIZEN Harry James Will Play At CPO Club At Boca Chica Committee Tells Schedule For Oil PREVIEW OF HATS TO COME!—A group of the HS-1 and Fleet Training Group Wives model ‘sample” hats they whipped up in preparation for the luncheon at Fort Taylor Officers’ Club on November 5 when the two groups will be co-hostesses. HS-1 And Fleet Training Groups Have Joint Coffee; Plan Luncheon Ideas buzzed excitedly at Aeropalms, Thursday, Octcber 7, around 1:00 a.m. when the wives of the Fleet Training Group entertained the HS-1 Officers Wives Club at their monthly coffee. The main topic of excitement was the coming luncheon at Fort ‘Taylor on which the two groups are collaborating to entertain the Officers Wives clubs of Key West. Mrs. SE. Purcell, chairman of the HS-1 group, conducted ‘the busi- ness meeting, which revolved a- round the course of plans for the November luncheon. The theme of the November luncheon which these two groups: are sponsoring is a “Come and Wear your Own Hat” affair with prizes offered for the cleverest, the “zaniest’? — which means an uninhibited original crea- tion, and the prettiest of hats, pre- “sented. There will be judges, real Prizes, and, of course, loads of fun to plan on, Minutes of the last HS-1 coffee were read by the secretary, Mrs. J.B, McDougal, te the treasur- er’s report’ given ‘by Mrs,’ John Fouche. * Other club topics for HS-1 includ- edplans for the coming October japon forthe HS-1 girls for which Mrs.: Fouche and Mrs, R, Luke.and Mrs. J. Eason are the hogtess¢s, Time and place will be announced at a later date. Very decorative and delicious re- freshments, climaxed an interesting get‘>vether of the two groups. 1 ‘ghts of the morning were hat-shaped cookies which had ~-en made and decorated by Mrs. Kay Cassoni and Mrs. Sue Keenan of the. hostess group. The cookies, decorated in vari- colored pastels like minutes Spring bonnets, tasted to match their lus- cious appearance. In fact, the word “hat” will strike a happy note on the faces of these gals who are planning fun for all the wives who plan on wearing their very own- styled hats, at the November Fort Taylor luncheon, Also, the wives of the HS-1 group would like to thank again the cof- fee hostesses from the Fleet Train- ing Group wives for their wonder- ful co-operation and refreshments. el Madison Didn’t Like To Do His Own Housework SANTA MONICA, Calif. w—Guy Madison; the cowboy actor, spent too much time home on the range, he complained in winning a di- vorce Wednesday from actress Gail Russell. The couple. married‘ in 1949 and separated-last year. Madison agreed to pay his wife $12,000 cash plus minimum ali- mony of $2,400 a year for the next 10 years, or until she remarries, MALA POWERS WILL BECOME HOUSEWIFE HOLLYWOOD (#—Male Powers says she’s giving up the screen for the life of a real estate man’s wife. Organized and equipped within one week, the twenty-two volunteers «| are performing a service for all of Sigsbee Park. “We meet the buses and see the children safely across the street, and at the same time we are help- ing the motorist in. keeping the children all together in a group. Stopping the children from strag- gling across the street, making them cross in/ crosswalks, and stopping traffic so that a group may cross safely are the things we are trying to do,” said Mrs. Fraz- er, chairman of the “Mother's Pa- trol. Street signs depicting policemen have been donated to the group by the Coca Cola Bottling works in Key West. More signs depicting school children have been promised by the Holsum Bakery, Belts and badges have been donated by the Automobile Association of America and were obtained through the ef-' forts of Mr. Myrtland Cates. “The one thing we really need now,” said Mrs. Frazer, “is more volunteers. We have a duty list made up but it would be much bet- ter if we could have enough wo- men to furnish: replacements in case of illness or other emergen- cies. Any woman interested could contact me by calling 2-8803.” The women have been empower- ed to step out in the middle of the street and stop traffic at corners. Sticker numbers or license num- bers of violators will be taken and turned in to.the authorities for ac- tion. “We intend to protect our chil- dren here in Sigsbee,” said Mr. Roberts, president of the Com- munity Council. “This is but’ the beginning wedge to make all. driv- ers safety conscious.” If you have’ an electric outlet on your porch use it for snacks during hot weather. All - RLIE ‘? @hief Petty Officers and their guests will dance to the music of Harry James and his Music Mak- ers on October 31 at the CPO Club, Boca Chica. Lovers of popular music know the treat that is in store for those who attend this affair, since the aggregation of musical talent head- ed by James and his trumpet has been heard in movies, on juke- boxes and over the airwaves since 1939, when the musician, then only 23, cut loose from Benny Good- man’s band and organized his own orchestra. HARRY JAMES James and his Music Makers caught on with the public and dur- ing the World War II years they catapulted into the limelight and stayed there. Of particular note was an engagement at the Para- mount Theatre in New York in the spring of 1943, when his fans creat- ed traffic jams and riots which brought front page stories about the band even in the conservative New York Times. Further James publicity occur- red'in July of 1943 when the band leader was married to Betty Grable, number one pin-up girl at that time. The Jameses now make their home, with their two daugh- ters, Victoria Elizabeth and Jessi- ca, in Beverly Hills, California. ‘The James orchestra has appear- ed in numerous movies, and James served as technical adviser and played all the trumpet parts in “Young Man With a Horn.” Poinciana PTA Sets Debate On Fluoridation “Should we have fluoridation” will be the topic of a debate to be held by.°the Poinciana Parent- Teachers Association in their next regular meeting in Poinciana School.
