SUE ‘JONES, Editor Tuesday, October 5, 1954 Things are sorta at the conglom- eration point this Tuesday inas- much as a great deal has occurred | since our last visit. The ferry serv- ice is an actuality — and almost equally unbelievable—the GIANTS ‘WON! Ho-de-do and happy day and four straight it was! Recall read- ing that it was unfair for New City to sprinkle the confetti for the Giants when the Yankees had cop- ped five straight World Champion- ships — and been ignored in the torn paper department—but do be- lieve that part of the great joy at the Giants’ vietory was based on the fact that the’ Yankees’ consis- tent winning was getting to be a bit of old hat. Speaking of things old—shall we make the rounds again of our shops, and today shall tell you of the new merchandise which has been recéived and new buys to be found! S22 mee An opportunity to learn danc- ing. the easy and successful way at the Key West Division of the Fred Astaire Scheol of Dance is new yours! By phoning 2-4760 or dropping in their new studio lo- cated at 429 Duval Street—(up- stalre ever the Ideal Togs), you will be surprised to learn: that dancing ip not difficult under ex: pert and experienced instruction, which is jatile at this newly opened scheol, under the super- vision of Rollene Pollock with Princess Nine jallet Director and Helen Vessichio assisting in this department. ‘Sa aes There was a tiny rainbow—sorta : cut off at the ends and the blue, and yellow and pinkish red were so very pale. The rest of the sky had gray black clouds ahead and in the opposite direction — ;there were patches of real blue’ with enormous off-white clouds. Final- ly drops: of rain hit the windshield and then lengthened into long} strips of water and the waiting time accumulated. ‘ | The hour finally became 10:15 A.M. of a Saturday morning — October 2,1954 and it would seem that when the giant of noise of whistles. gnd horns from the sur- rounding Navy Ships—decked out at full dress—rose—so, at the same time—a dazzling sun, with radiant blue sky took over. The first. color- fully decorated ships appeared ‘round the bend and then—came the sparkling trim and beautiful “City of Key West"—looking real purty and proud. And so the history of doubt and hope which had surrounded the “ferry to Cuba” disappeared—as did the uncertainty of the weather that morning—and to Cuba by Car from Our Town became a reality! Every pF Ss hours tru: ly finds @ buy which is truly ex- ceptional. The MUSIC SHOPPE, 72% Duval is new carrying the “DECCA PHONOGRAPHS” for $31.95! Simply must tell you that this is without a doubt an amaz- ing record player for the price! THREE SPEEDS. and TWO jefly, you can DELITY per. fermance—and having heard it— can recommend a listening plea- sure which one wouldn't believe pessible for only $31.95! The Decee phonograph is port- able, and comes in a handsome @reen and gray case. Also, an- other outstanding feature to com- plete the BEST POSSIBLE PHONOGRAPH BUY is the fact that it has a ceramic crystal which further insures fine pl ing of all your favorité records, whether they be 33 - 45 or 78! What with Christmas beckon- ing, be sure to consider this on your gift list, because truly a better phonograph buy can not be found! The Music Shoppe, 726 Duval for the “Decca” record player and also, a super selec- tion of recordings and sheet music! £& Bz As I drove off the “mole” —(the seawall road curving out from the docks and piers of the Naval Sta- | a bookworm to enjoy " puying propellers seemed to be a part of the superstructure. S28 =2 Even the seafood in our sur- rounding waters looked happy and thrilled when they found out that THE A AND B LOBSTER HOUSE IS NOW OPEN! Y’see, they are sorta particular about how they will be cooked and they know the perfection of the sea- food dinners at the A and B! Al- so, they love seeing their old swimming hole — around the waterfront—and truly the vii is gorgeous at this excellent sea- food dining spot — 700 Front Street! £2 5> 28 And up and down the length of the mole, the grind and whirrrr of starting cars seemed to form a salute to the’ “City of Key West” which continued on out to sea on its way to Cardenas. Leaving the station—driving by Truman Beach past the Fort relic jutting into the water—remember- ed one by one so clearly the events which had occurred in the shaping and forming of both the great past, the marvelous present and the grand future of Our Town. Was so very glad to have witnessed an-! onther event of progress and im-| portance for the good of Our Town. Then I knew that the panorama | of men and ships which seemed | that day to have been placed in a great, huge bathtub of water—al- though beautiful to behold and won- | derful in the prospects of progress —meant a great deal more. It was an ending to the hard work and ambition and idealism and again, courage of conviction—of the peo- ple of Our Town. sess ££ The Bookshop (on Fleming Street — right below Simonton) not only has the widest and best selection of books, but it now HAS A‘ TELEPHONE. Her stroller had a} pale yellow terry cloth upholstery and she looked very proud of it. Her friend, Bobbie O’Neal was leaning out of a red and white striped one and his big brown eyes | looked very puzzled over the emp-| tiness of his sand bucket, which— | do believe—in baby talk he was ing to tell yours truly to “pleese | | i Saw something last week which | has had yours truly in a real dither trying to keep quiet about | it and alack and alas—still can not tell you all, but Herman’s, | 512 Duval Street will shortly start to ship their CRUISE CLOTHES to specialty shops on Madison | Avenue and other outlets. Shall tell you later of the new styles, but right now want to speak & bit of the FABULOUS | FABRICS from which these beau- tiful clothes are made! Some of you all may know that HERMAN is famous not only for his ORIGINALS, but for the ex- | quisite and handsome fabric of | which they are made right in his wn workrooms. Ninety percent of the materials used carry an | “Import” label and not one pie of cloth can be du: ted any- where! Herman’s originals are tion) scanned again the magnifi- cent and unforgettable scene. It was complete. The entire caval- cade of small Navy craft, the shrimp boats, the Galss. Bottom boat, the smaller private boats, the little motor boats skipping to and fro and cutting in and out, the ships in full dress—the outriggers of the fishing boats colorfully wrapped in crepe paper, a red barge-like looking boat with a blue, blue flag and what appeared to be a sailfish in red-on it—the abstract patterns formed by the rope bump- ers on the Navy tugs and above, circling and swooping two helicop- ters. One flew close to the City of leg West and from a distance, the cut from material which have | and proven labels. They | id only to the courtier | and not to fabric shops or | over any counter. | And between mee co dete showing, yours truly sha’ a bit mars with the background of the lovely, lovely fabrics used to make HERMAN’S ORIGINALS— which are one of the many rea- sons why it's nice to say—“lt Came From Herman’s”. = = EUROPEAN ECHOES: Comes now a card from Emily and Lee Goddard which says in print “Boka - Zaliv Pogled sa Kotorske tvrdave”—and her written message tells of another vastly interesting | very highly as they are truly ex- spot—Dubrov nik- ancient Ragusa! where they are stopping. The, stamps are from Jugosiavi-| ja and the picture on the card shows a breathtaking view but still can not tell you—when Emily andj Lee are comitig home—hope that soon they will have ended their | European roam (can scarcely wait | to hear all about it!)! Hurry| Home! £22: There is a Supermarket in Poinciana and it's really a good one. Name brands of canned goods — SWIFT‘S PREMIUM MEATS—choice of frozen foods— candies and cookies and all the miscellaneous items on your marketing list. In addition to all these things, you'll find an atmosphere and in- | terest which makes “Bill's Sup- ermarket’’ a genuine neighbor- hood “store. Perhaps it is be- cause of the fine family—Bill and Sheila, whi e newly weds and Bill’s parents who are help- ing them get started in the gro- cery business, t'-t make this store a wonder.™ place to gro- cery shop. As a matter of fact, take the whole family to ‘Bill's Supermarket’‘—the kids will love it with free lollipops and Poppa can talk with Red Jones the butcher and order a steak to just the thickness and circum: he wishes—and Momma can re ly check off all the items she | needs—at the grocery in Poinci- ana—Bill’s Supermarket! S23 25 KEY-notes: By the shirt with its riotous, colorful pattern and the multi-colored striped Bermuda shorts and the duck-billed stiff) straw hat and the general manner of self-consciousness accompanying their wearing, you would know he/| was a tourist. Of course, the cam- era over the shoulder completed the easy identification. And. so it was that yours truly saw him sitting on an upturned wooden box in the scrimpy shade of a building on Fleming just above Duval Street and it seemed rather pitiful that a person who took time and trouble and money to visit Our Town—should be given such a meager means of “resting himself’. zs 36 = Surprise Mother with a most special treat and something which will not only please her, but be a bit different!
