SOCIETY — PERSONALS — NEWS OF INTEREST TO WOMEN SUE JONES, Editor Page2 THE KEY WEST CITIZEN Tuesday, September 21, 1954) Because the pup was all over | | with oil, she figured that he had gotten out of the car when it stop- | ped at a gas station and had re- Walkiing the dog, ‘“Mac’’ this | ‘morning, was reminded of the day | slightly more than five years ago | when I strolled into a bookshop in | Virgina and found about twenty people gathered in a circle with their attention on a small, strong: | smelling, whimpering liitle bit of canine, Obviously lost, he had been loitering about the backdoor} of a drug store. The pharmacist had thrown some kind of chemical | solution on him and pitched him in the street right in front of the | moving traffic. His cruelfy to the little dog caused the Humane Siciety to re- ceive eight reports and too, for | the above gathering of shocked people. As the crowd broke up, | only another woman and Mac and yours truly were left. She thought he might have been a lost puppy of hers, but finally decided in the | negative. To this day, shall never under- | stand who said those words, “But T'll take him home”— and so it} was, that I stuffed Mac into a/ shopping bag and never having had | 4 dog before, began the rewards, troubles, companionship, responsi- bility, woes and pleasure which pets add to one’s life. Ssames It was one of those ordinary misunderstainzs as to who had tied Mac, with the result that it was noon before he was missed, Spent about an hour driving around trying to find him> As time went on, that feeling of _ complete helpjessness and hopless- | ness set in. | Returning home — phoned the Humane Society and of course, the Citizen to put in a “lost” ad. Can't remember who answered the Phone, but he was very sympa- thetic with my loss. Hours passed and more frantic and aimless driving about and then night came. At that time was living over in Conchtown and shall never forget how wonderful my neighbors were im trying to help me find Mac. Then friends phoned and gently spoofed me for referring in the ad to Mac as a “child’s pet” when they knew he was strictly my pooch and finally with Mac still missing, it was time to sleep. = S22 At the Banana Tree Grille, 523 Truman you'll find avacadoes! S23 == When the phone rang the next morning, in spite of my sadness and exhaustion—hope returned and I excitedly answered. It was the}| man on the Citizen who happily | told me that a lady (who had incidently been a society editor on the Citizen and I can’t for the life of me remember her name—it wasn’t June Williams though) had found a dog and to call her. She immediately asked me to describe Mac and when I told her! he was a red cocker spaniel and a very, very handsome one, she} gave me an address on Olivia} Street of Mrs. Johnson.
