Cleveland Stretches League Lead; Giants Slump Yanks Trail By 8% In American; Bums Gain In National Loop By JOE REICHLER Associated Press Sports Wrier It would be ridiculous to accuse ; the five-time world champion New, York Yankees of “choking up.” It must be gratifying to the long-suffering Cleveland faithful, however, today to check back dar-! ing the past few days and discover | that.it was the proud Yankees, and not the maligned Indi-ns, who lost seven of their last 10 clutch games. casitsoaions 37, And in the same period, the Indians lost only two out of 10 to pick up five big games on the weary world champions, If ever there had been any doubts about Cleveland’s intestinal fortitude, the American League leaders dispelled them yesterday with a glorious double triumph over New York that all but ended the long Yankee dynasty. The 4-1 and 3-2 victories before 86,563 spectators, the largest crowd ever to watch a baseball game, stretched Cleveland’s first place) margin-over the Yankees to 8% lengths. That is almost an insur- mountable hurdle for Casey Sten- gel’s crew. With only 10 games left, the Indians can clinch their first flag since 1948 by merely winning three, even if the Yankees win all their remaining 11. In fact, I’m going to try not to get hit.” Ez has his own analysis of Mar- ciano, who licked him with a unan- imous decision last June 17: a tre- mrendous volume of punches, few of them direct hits, plus tremendous strength. “If he couldn’t punch, he’d be a bum in the ring,” said Charles. Charles figures on weighing 190 — four and a half pounds more than he did in the last contest — when he steps into the Yankee Stadium ring . “Sure, he hurts,” Charles admit- ted. “But he doesn’t floor you with a single punch. I feel stronger this time. I’ve been punching the heavy bags more and I’ve added a mile or a mile and a half of roadwork to the three miles I did each morn- ing in June.” Charles is sort of a quiet fellow and still refused to make a definite prediction on the outcome of the fight. “If I put some punches together, I'll be all right,” was about the closest he came to summing up his chances. THE KEY WEST CITIZEN Monday, September 13, 1954| Ez Means To Dodge Punches; Rocky Aims At Fast Start Champ Is Surprised At Story Louis Said He Was ‘Foul Fighter’ By JACK HAND GROSSINGER, N.Y. (®—Heavy- weight champion Rocky Marciano | isn’t fooling this time. Remembering with a shudder that he was behind on the cards of all three officials for the first half of his last title bout with Ez-| zard Charies, the king of heavies| declared today: “TI hope to get off to a fast start because I know Charles might try to do something with me.” The Rock, going into his last day of training before Wednesday night’s fight, thinks he might have stayed in camp a little too long before the first Charles battle which he finally won by a unani- mous decision. “I had some dull days a week! before the last fight,”’ he said be- fore hitting the road. “I think the Brooklyn Manager By BARD LINDEMAN BROOKLYN (# — Manager Walt. Alston of the Brooklyn Dodgers took one look at: the remaining schedule and couldn’t help smil- ing. But he said cautiously: timing is just right for me this time.” Marciano weighs 188 pounds and has boxed 112 rounds in 26 work- outs. Today was to be devoted to road work and camp will break tomorrow. Before the first Charles |bout, the Rock boxed 180 rounds. Meanwhile, _ the with reports of former heavy- | weight champion Joe Louis ‘tagging Rocky a “foul fighter.” It was as good a way as any to keep interest up, and it drew immediate retorts from Marciano’s camp. “I’m surprised at Joe,” said Marciano. “I don’t know why he’d say that.” Marciano said his style was best described as a “rough type who might look like he’s hitting foul but really wan’t. “As far as hitting after the bell (a Louis accusation), said Rock, “Charles started it, not me.
