More and more folks are buying sets and, unfortunately, too many of these pedple are receiving poor reception. We are in a ‘fringe’ locality but there is-no reason why a good TV set, properly installed, should not prove thoroughly en- e. Will Julius, a retired Navy Chief, operates Key West Radio and TV Service—located at 826 Duval St. He tells me that as often as not, it's the little things which are over- looked during installation which cause poor reception. “Everybody and his brother has hopped on the TV bandwagon—sélling, installing; repairing sets,” he points out. “Men who had never done anything more complicated than turning the switch of their radio, blossomed out over- night into electronics experts! Is it any wonder that Key Westers are dissatisfied with their purchases? “You would be surprised at the number of calls I've had concerning poor recéption. The first thing I do is use @ multi-test meter which often indicates that the trouble is éntirely due to poor workmanship—especially on the an- tenna. Sloppy workmanship or the use of old, scarred-up wire dejinitely reduces signals received.” Twenty-Five Years In Electronics Will Julius probably knows what he is talking about. My scientific knowledge is limited to changing a ribbon on this typewriter and even then, I often run into difficulty, so I'll accept his word on TV. Julius entered the Navy in the early 1930's and his first agsigninent was that of radio From 1930 to 1950 marked the Navy’s greatest advances in the field of electronics and Julius had the opportunity to aid in this forward movement—aboard ships, and during World War Il, while flying in the Pacific. Upon retising from the Navy, he accepted employment in ihe local Yard. Masachusetts Institute of Technology beckoned and he went up to Boston to work in its électronic Igkoratories. His wife didn’t like cold weather, however. (Julius married a Key West girl, Lola Cervantes, in 1937), so they returned to The Rock. Julius again accepted @m- ployment doing electronics work at NOB and when he had saved a little money, he opened. his own radio and TV service. Distributor For Philco Products Key West Radio & TV Service is the newest distributor for Philco products. While specializing in Philco TV séts, the store also has an assortment of Philco electric ranges, refrigerators, radios, etc. Key West Radio & TV Service is one of the few stores in town where the owner of the establishment is capable of maintaining the guarantee is- sued on new products. In most other cases, the stere owner has to relay the defective merchandise to an outside repair shop—thug increasing the costs which are passed along to the customer. T asked Will Julius about some of the equipment in his shop. All of his testing equipment is “Precision” brand— supposed to be the "Cadillac of the radio world.” He showed me an Oscilloscope which takes some sort of pic- tures of electrical wave forms or something—a Sweep Gen- erator—a Signal Generator—a Vacuum Tube fester. (Re- member I said when I started writing this piece that I didn’t know anything about scientific gadgets?!) At any rate, it takes all four of those instruments to properly align a TV receiver. ‘Julius has made friends of @ lot of customers by offering prompt, courteous howse- service. “It there is any possibility of fixing a set in the home,” he explains, “we always do so. It saves the customer money and saves us time. Of course, waa Repeating is necessary, we have to take the set to the shop. We make evening calls but only by appointment.” Judges Philco Best The owner of Key West Radio & TV Service says that he thinks Philco is the best TV set on the market. “Philco has always been known for its reliable products,” Julius says. “And the price of a Philco is economical. “We sell our product on easy terms, financed through the bank at low rates. This is ly attractive to cus- tomers who have leerned to their cntew about how high — rates can really be—in spite of « law regulating em.
