eee SOCLE SUE JONES, Editor In a punning mood, we could say that Dior’s new fashions are Dil- ley’s, and that Dilley’s ideas are “Di-orders from headquarters.” *Tis a strange business — mi- lady’s fashions. There is no doubt that the change in styles in predi- cated on new business for the dress designers and manufactur- ers, rather than the altruistic aim ‘to really make the ladies prettier and more attractive. However, yours truly believes that in years past and years to come, the lady who dresses well is the one who goes on the theory that when people say, “You look lovely in that dress, or hat or etc.”—rather than “Gee, what a stunning dress”—she is well dress- ed. And so it is that the styles shouid be sifted and the new lines and de- Signs not ignored, but considered and the old adage — “dress to please the men” will prevail and the opposite sex seems to say “Down with Dior’. Also, there will be. many ladies who will have na- tural difficulties following the re- turn to the flat figure. Your Child Today By DOROTHY V .WHIPPLE, ak When youngsters get into their teens their need for money be- comes acute. The allowance is j often not enough to take care of | their numerous needs. It’s not a bad idea to let a child work for some of the extra money he wants. Perhaps this will help him understand that cash doesn’t grow on bushes, nor does it just appear in dad’s pocket or mother’s purse. But paid jobs at home need to be carefully handled. They must be real work — not just some- thing manufactured to give the child the feeling of working. You can’t fool a child. He knows whether what he’s doing is worth- while or not. If you can manage, the job you give your teen-ager should be something that you would hire someone on the outside to do. “If you want to do it, Pll give you the money instead of paying So-and-So to do it.” In these days of apartment liv- ing it isn’t always easy to find real jobs. If you live in the sub- urbs or in the country, there’s seldom a lack of jobs. The cel- eeds cleaning, the garage organizing, the windows |need washing, maybe a room or a piece of furniture needs paint- ing. When there are younger chil- dren in the family, baby sitting | may be a real job. Pay a reasonable rate, either — ee, a en sabe val Street on October 2. Members of the Education de- partment of the Woman’s Club will serve as hostesses for the affair. It will be a departure from the receptions of other years in that it will be an “open house.” There will be no meeting or pro- gram other than some music. The emphasis will be placed on meeting the teachers and intro- ducing them to club members. The first meeting of the club has been set for October 12 to enable the president to attend the state board meeting in Gainesville on October 4 and 5. The annual budget and the pro- posed revisions to the by-laws will be presented at the October 12 meeting. There will be no reception fol- lowing this meeting as members will attend the reception for the teachers. The board voted to co-sponsor the girl chosen by the Junior Wo- man’s Club to represent them in the selection of the queen of the fiesta in connection with the cele- bration of the sailing of the Key West - Havana Ferry. WASHABLE UPHOLSTERY FABRIC A new upholstery comes in cot- ton tweed and is water repellent so soil or stains can be sudsed off | with a minimum of effort. The pre- shrunk fabric can be washed in | place or given hot suds and rinses in a washing machine or tub. It also is wrinkle resistant. by the hour or by the job. Offer ja little help, or a little know-how if necessary, but in general don’t |supervise too much and don’t pitch in and let the child watch you do it and then collect his wages. A job that’s paid for should not be something the child should do anyway. Children should grow up with a sense of belonging to the family and of doing certain things about the home, simply be- cause they are members of the family. Don’t pay a child for making his bed, keeping his room in order or helping with the dishes. These are routine things of every day life that everyoné must-do to make family living run smoothly. If you begin paying for the things any member of a group should contribute willingly with- out compensation, you soon find that the child has little consider- | ation for others. Not long ago I was having tea with a friend out in her garden. The sun went under and it became chilly. My friend asked her son |to go in and get her a jacket. The boy said he'd do it for a nickel. Don’t pay for the courtesies of life. And don’t pay for getting good grades at school or brush- ing teeth or taking a bath.
