RYAN AP Foreign News Analyst A new war would be unthinka- ble. Dreadful new weapons would destroy civilization. Peaceful co- existence of two opposed systems, one free and one based on regi- mentation and slavery, may be possible. The ‘totalitarian system might, if sufficiently appeased, co- operate for peace. That sounds like today’s world. But it was pretty much the situa- tion 15 years fgo today on the eve of the greatest war in history. at war started Sept. 1, 1939, en totalitarian Nazi Germany ehed into Poland. id pihieen years later, much of the global drama seemed upside down with principal characters in the wrong roles. But otherwise, little has changed and the world seems almost to have come a complete circle. Fifteen years ago it was the Berlin-Rome-Tokyo Axis. Today it ‘is the Moscow-Peiping Axis. Fif- teen years ago the issue was free- dom against slavery. Today it is the same. Fifteen years ago the price of peaceful coexistence was a free hand for totalitarian expan- ion. wyifteen years ago the world had gone through rehearsals in Spain, Ethiopia and Manchuria for the global war to come. Today’s world has seen similar actions in Korea Indochina. “But there are some big differ- ences. World War II was preceded by a series of aggressions. The League of Nations, then the world’s hope of global cooperation for peace, did nothing. But in Korea the United Nations, or at least that segment of it willing to support the United States, met aggression with armed resistance and the aggres- was halted. ba World i ig the United States was unarmed, unpre} and just struggling out of the ef- fects of a devastating world eco- nomic depression. Today the Unit- ed States has a stockpile of power- ful deterrents—atomic weapons. It has a. string of strategic air bases poised and ready, And the Amer- ican economy has been flourishing. Then the United States was largely on the sidelines in the for- lorn hope that the rest of. world could fight out its ‘gwnrwa without involving Americans. day the United Stat even a bit against its.) itself thrust into a position of world leadership. te Korean War Dead Returned By GENE KRAMER PANMUNJOM ® —The bodies of 800 men killed in the Korean War, including 193 Americans, started home today in the first ex- change of soldiers who died and were buried .n enemy territory, ‘The 193 Americans were among 200 Allied bodies which eight dark green Russian - built mortuary trucks delivered to the U.N. Com- mand in a green valley of the neutral zone. The seven other bodies were not identified as to nationality. U.S. Army trucks brought to the exchange point the bodies of 500 Koreans and 100 Chinese soldiers. ‘The exchange is expected to con- tinue more than a month, The Reds said they would turn over the bodies of 151 Americans, 3 Britons, 33 Koreans and 13 bodies unidenti- fied as to nationality tomorrow. The Allies will deliver 600 more Communist bodies. The bodies received yesterday were taken by U.S. Army trucks southward into territory for solemn ceremonies in which Gen, Maxwell D. Taylor, 8th Army commander, and 40 chaplains of different faiths took part. The bodies will be kept in a white | ¢ quonset hut unti. Sept. 3, when they will be moved by train to Pusan and by ship to Kokura, Japan. A Although the Communists sup- plied a list of names, none of the bodies will be identified until after positive identification is made from Washington.’This may take several months, CLIMBERS TOP RECORD TOKYO ® — A postwar record total of 121,159 persons climbed Mt.
