Mims BattlesPortuguez In TV Bout Wed. Holly Mims, third ranked mid- dleweight contender from Washing- ton, D. C., and Tuzo Portuguez, of Costa Rica, battle on August 25 in a 10-round contest at New York's Madison Square Garden, This will be Holly’s fourth appearance on the nationally televised Blue Rib- don Bouts program and Tuzo’s first. The Wednesday night fight will be aired locally over station WTVJ - TV, ch annel 4, while 100 CBS-TV stations carry the contest from coast to coast. Starting time is 10 p, m., Eastern Daylight Time. In previous televised Wednesday night bouts Mims has furnished plenty of action and excitement to viewers. In four Pabst Bouts Holly defeated Jesse Turner, Moses Ward and George Johnson and drew with Bobby Dykes. Consider- ed one of the best all-around ring- men, Holly has a good jab, hook and cross. He fights well either close or at long range and likes to battle in counter - punching flurriés. Although not: considered a imockout puncher, Mims in recent contests has registered well in this phase of boxing: His most sensa- tional kayo victory occurred in March of 1953 when he stopped pre- viously unbeaten Willie Troy in the eighth round. Undefeated in 1953, Mims is an exciting fighter to watch and is highly regarded a- | mong TV fight fans. A wild - swinging middleweight, Portuguez will certainly test the boxing ability of Mims. Born in San Jose, Costa Rica, in Novem- ber of 1927, Tuzo turned profession- al in 1946, In 1949 he came to New York and in his debut kayoed Bob- by Mann. In his second American bout he decisioned Beau Jack in a 10 - rounder. A good left hooker, Portuguez often wears himself down with his two-fisted assaults. His wide-open style makes him susceptible to a kayo punch, but only an opponent as fleet-fisted as himself is capable of landing such a blow. Known as the “Kid” to televiewers, Tuzo defeated Garth Panter, Jesse Turner and Charley Williams, among others. A hard puncher, the Costa Rican lost to Walter Cartier in a bruising 10- round affair, but not before he had floored Cartier in the fifth stanza and had him wobbly in the sixth from a savage attack. The tentative Blue Ribbon Bouts scheduled or September incluacs the telecasting nationally of two world championships, two non-title bouts and a radio broadcast of an- other world title event. On September 1, Kid Gavilan de- fends his welterweight crown a- gainst Johnny Saxton in Philadel- phia, and on September 22, cham- pion Paddy De Marco meets Jim- my Carter for the lightweight title in San Francisco. Both of these world championship contests will be televised nationally. The heavyweight bout for the Sept- ember 15 from New York will not be televised due to a time preemp- tion by Westinghouse. However, the action will be carried by a 200 ‘BS radio station network. The two non-title TV bouts for September have not been confirm- ed at this date. OPP aN OZURNAS ES Aes [Braves Have 8 Days To Get Back Into By BEN PHLEGAR Associated Press Sports Writer The Milwaukee Braves have eight days left to get back into the National League pennant fight. After that it will be too late. The big tests start tonight when Philadelphia moves into County Stadium in Milwaukee for the first of three games. Then comes New York for two games and Brooklyn for four. A sweep would make the Braves dangerous contenders. A misstep anywhere along the path could be the end. Last week should be edged in black on Milwaukee calendars. Only seven days ago the Braves ‘were a mere 3% games out of the lead and owned a nine-game win- ning streak. Then came four losses in six games and now they’re 74 behind. Although faced with a real battle to stay in first division, the Phillies Page 6 Player-Club— . Hoppy, K.W..
