Over two hundred teachers, their husbands and wives gathered at the beach at six o’clock for the af- a special treat for the new- ers on the staff, home-made lime pies were served. ; on the menu were home beans, chef’s salad, garlic d, ice tea, potato chips, relish- , coffee and ice tea. The steaks were broiled over a eharcoal fire by members of the coaching staff. All the food ‘was prepared by other members of the faculty — including a pie bak- ed by one of the men teachers at the high school! (It was delicious.) Several of the teachers spent the summer abroad or toured various; parts of the country. A great many of them went to summer school! for refresher courses and to take special work in their fields. Those who worked on the school summer recreation program came in for a lot of good-natured ribbing on what price baby-sitting and joshing about the ‘suntan they ac- quited “loafing on the beach.” The youngest guest present was the two months old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Blais who was making her first public ap- pearance She came “formal” in a pair of blue and white polka dot didies! One pretty new teacher said, “1 never saw anything like this. When they told: me-the school board was going to have a picnic, I never dreamed it would bé anything more than cold cuts and potato salad!” All the new teachers expressed themselves as being amazed at the helpfulness and genuine hospitality extended to them by Key Westers. Several of them said they had never seen people go out of their way to make them feel at home the way the school authorities and local people had done. “We were a little worried about finding housing in Key West so you can imagine how nice it was to have a long list of available places ready and waiting for us when we got here.” One attractive young lady econ- fided that it was her first year and she was “‘scared to death the first time she met the faculty, but they’ve just been wonderful about helping me get started.” ‘They all agreed that it was a wonderful way to get acquainted with each other and with teachers in other schools in the city, and that they were looking forward to @ good school year. cooled by an “extra half-ton”! = = Have heard. there was a bit of confusion surrounding Friday’s column. Jones of 522 Rose Lane, has. re- ported to the Charleston Group, At- lantic Reserve Fleet for duty. He was further transferred to Com- mander Sub Group 2, Charleston Group, Atlantic Reserve Fleet, U. S. Naval Base here. Jones, who entered the Navy in July, 1952, reported aboard from the submarine chaser USS 1387. Before entering the Navy, Jones was graduated from Burgaw High School, Burgaw; N. Members of the Litle Leeague “All Star” team were given a beach party at the County Beach on Saturday, by Mr, and Mrs. Tony Estenoz. The boys brought their parents, brothers and sisters to the wienie roast. Soft drinks, cake and candy were also provided by the hosts. The All Stars didn’t win the fin- als but the whole community is proud of the fight they put up and glad to have youngsters like these in the community. Clever Decorations At VX-1 “Travel Time” Luncheon One of the nicest luncheons of the summer season was enjoyed by the Officer’s Wives Club of VX-1, Thursday, August 19, at the A and B Lobster House. The ladies responsible for this enjoyable occason were Mrs. W. C, Kistler, chairman, . Mrs. C. W. Knaggs and Mrs. R. D. Meldahl. The name tags were tiny suit- cases carrying out the theme of the day, “Travel Time.” The clever and original place cards were maps of the different states of the U. S. A. Each mem- ber failing to recognize the state ‘on-her place card paid a small penalty. The attractively decorated tables, arranged in a horseshoe, were cen- tered with different types of min- iature conveyances. The delicious menu featured French fried shrimp, tossed salad, French fried potatoes, hushpuppies, ice tea or coffee. Lime Sherbet for dessert completed the menu.
