J. Sterrer, into the club. Gerald Saunders informed the two new members that the Lions Club was the largest civic club in the world, “We only get out of the club what we put in,” Saunders said. Louis Eisner told the members that the 500 brooms had arrived and requested that a price be set. The profit from the brooms will go towards the fund of the emer- gency March of Dimes Drive. Broom Sale Set In addition to the members agreeing to sell the brooms indi- vidually, a plan was set to sell them on Duval Street Saturday night. Clarence Higgs, county commis- sioner, as a kick-off for the broom project immediately bought three dozen for the county to use in their various buildings. Louis Carbonell, a city commis- sioner, when asked if he was go- ing to follow the county’s lead on the broom sale, said that he didn’t have any authority to buy anything for the city but that he would call Victor Lang, City Manager, to see if the city could use any brooms. The brooms are a very good type. Any one desiring to purchase one should call Louis Eisner at his fur- niture store. Guests for the dinner meeting in- cee Lt. Bill Kistler, a Navy pi- ot. COMPLAINTS OF (Continuea From Page One) ployees from the hobby shop, Dur- bin quoted Towner as saying that the ban is ordered by Navy regu- lations since the hobby shop is operated under Ships Service. Durbin said the shop was start- ed originally by civilians during World War II. Driving Ban Durbin said the recently impos- ed ban on civilian employees driv- ing on the Navy Base included all civilian workers except supervisors and certain key personnel. Under a Navy Base order issued a few months ago, civilian work- ers had to buy an insurance pol- icy on any vehicle they wished to drive on Navy property. Now, said Durbin, since most civilian employees are banned from driving on the Navy Base, they are stuck with a worthless insurance policy. The policy only covered the ve- hicle while it was on Navy proper- Some of the civilians have re- ceived refunds on the policies, Durbin added. Durbin said the vehicle ban in- cluded motor scooters. The scooters are considered a fire hazard, Durbin quoted Town- er as saying. Durbin said he wonders why ci- vilian scooters are considered a fire hazard while scooters owned by Navy personnel are apparent- ly not so considered. The Navy scooters are allowed to drive on i Navy property. Capt. Murphy said such places "| should be put out of bounds. “That is easy for us to do and easy for us to enforce,” he added. No bars outside of the city limits were mentioned by name at yes- terday’s meeting. CARBONELL TO (Continued from Page One) not want to do anything which will hurt the Navy.” “That’s the reason I want to meet with them and with USO of- ficials,” Carbonell said. He also pointed out that he would be in favor of putting the Poinciana building in first class shape for the USO and to main- tain the services now: given them by the city. The City presently gives the building to the USO rent free and furnishes utilities and janitorial service. TEENAGERS HITCH (Continued from Page One) sedan and told him to keep his mouth shut about the holdup. Price, however, reported the ‘matter to Robert G. Young, Flo- rida Highway Patrolman. Young picked up Jack Watson, Federal conservation officer. The two officers found the boys on the edge of Tavernier, attempting to catch a ride to Key West. The old- er boy still had the loaded pistol. More than 45 per cent of U. S. deaths now occur in hospitals compared to about 33 per cent in 1936.
