THE KEY WEST CITIZEN Monday, August 16, 1954 Try A ‘Quick Action’ Citizen Classi ied Ad - Dial 2-566] or 2-5662 THERE OUGHTA BE A LAW! Wacky Movie Of Talking Mule Showing “Francis Joins The Wacs’’ joins some of the screen’s most hilari- ous experiences by being a come- dy that starts out with a basically funny situation and never lets any- one or anything get in the way of that situation. As a result, this latest of the Talking Mule’s fabu- lous adventures sent audiences in- to loud convulsions of laughter. at the Strand Theatre, where it open- ed yesterday. Just the notion of Donald O’Conner, again cast as hapless Peter Stirling, being assigned to the ladies’ army through the mis- calculations of the Army’s electro- nic classifier is enough to start the belly laughs rumbling. And every- thing that happens lives up to these extravagant expectations. Donald alternately gets fouled up or has a field day with such Wacs as Major Lynn Bari, Cap- tain Julia Adams and Private Ma- mie Van Doren, And when Francis (hearing of Donald’s plight and of- fering himself as a medical corps guinea-pig) injects himself into the picture Donald again does double- time between his barracks and the psychiatrist—who still refuses to believe in talking mules. All of this merry confusion takes place against the background of the eternal battle of the sexes — thes time between Major Bari and testy General Chill Wills over the skill of women on the field of combat, with the showdown taking place during camouflage maneuvers as Donald and Francis lead the girls to crushing triumph. To list the outrageously funny moments might spoil your fun, but they come a-plenty when Donald trains his mis-fit but-beautiful pla- toon of GI-Janes, when Donald gets whipped by a wisp of a gal on the obstacle course, when the girls out- ‘rageously outmaneuver Wills’ corps on the camouflage showdown, and when Donald, Miss Adams, Miss Bari, Wills and Zasu Pitts make sugcessive forays on the finger- paint board for psycho-therapy. O'Connor was never busier, more befuddled or more bewilderingly funny than he is as the retread re- viving morale in the distaff army. Julia Adams is both decorative and decisive as Donald’s commanding officer. Chill Wills, who also is the voice of Francis, is a perfect foil , for the mule. Leading a brigade of barracks beauties. one Moe joren, Allison Hayes, Mara Cor- ries and Karen Kadler should’ make more men want to join the W.A.C. And Francis is, as usual, a “take-charge” guy all the way. Kersten Says Guatemala Was. To Be Beachhead MILWAUKEE (® — The Guate- malan government overthrown in June was firmly in the grip of the shackles of the Kremlin and was to Rave been a Communist beachhead for infiltration of other Latin-American governments, Rep. Kersten (R-Wis) said yesterday, Kersten, chairman of the House Committee on Communist Aggres- sion, announced that his commit- tee had obtained secret documents which show former Guatemalan President Jacobo Arbenz ‘“‘was in the complete control of the Com- unist apparatug.”” ie said his committee, which recently completed a study of Communist tyranny in Europe, would investigate Soviet interven- tion in Latin America, UN Leader Raps Luxury Quarters SINGAPORE (® — Mrs. Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, outgoing presi- dent of the U.N. Assembly, says she thinks the international organ- ization should meet in parts of, the world “undergoing great tension” rather than “secluded in a glass tower.” Addressing the second World Assembly of Youth here yester- day, the Indian woman leader said solutions to important questions might be speeded by putting U.N. delegates in close proximity to the troubles instead of in their New York headquarters, “with every kind of luxury inside and out tak- ing our minds away from these problems.” BEAUTIFUL CORAL HOTEL EFFICIENCY APTS.
