SOCIETY — PERSONALS — NEWS OF INTEREST TO WOMEN SUE JONES, Editor ITEMS OF INTEREST. Wednesday, August 11, 1954 THE KEY WEST CITIZEN Page 3 Exemplar Chapter Of Beta Sigma Phi Would like today to say—thank you to all my wonderful friends who are kind enough to ask me to their soirees and diplomatic enough to completely ignore my scribbling. To all these grand people would like to tender my apologies for my apparent rudeness in writing of a moment—a remark—or the im- mense pleasure which is mine in being their guest. Really, do try to remember many things, but then the time comes when a note must be made and invariably whether I duck behind a palm tree—or into an isolated spot and this includes even the one Dorothy Parker made famous in verse (seems as if she found a small office and it was lonely and she put a sign on the door—and had much company thereafter) I am discovered with paper and pencil—writing away at a great pace. Somehow or other—cannot con- quer the feeling of the little kid whose hand has just dipped into the cookie jar only to have an adult arrive on the scene. However, you all have been most understanding and tolerant and as you all know—the papers between the candies in this column are just for fun and pleasure of all the splendid people in—Our Town. It certainly is not a publicity busi- ness and may I repeat, there shall mever be any maliciousness or “soap box” yik-yak—and, I do try earnestly to check and double check (shades of Amos and Andy) all my facts. Also, if a request is made that something not be print- ed—+so be it. And, because—you dear readers are} also good and great friends— shall we—go shopping together? {2 en aeee There is a shop in Our Town which js not only picturesque and pleasant to drop in—but where you can find a wide selection of fabulous fabrics of all textures and patterns with which to dec- erate your home—or just redo a chair—or make tiny threw pil- lows (aside to husbands: you needn't duck—they‘re foam rub- ber!) The Caroline Shop, 223 Ann Street invites you to bring your decorating ideas or problems to them. They are really fashion wise with fabrics and know how te cool your tropical living and enhance your style of furnitu All work is expert and guaran- teed and too, they have all the accessories if you care to “make yeur own’’—slip covers, drape- ries, bedspreads, dressing table skirts, etc. = WELCOME TO: Frank and Amy Walker who are old friends and many of you will remember, have been stationed here before. Frank is Skipper of the Bushnell and Amy, who is house-hunting now and taking care of the kids—three —and if memory serves me cor- rectly, —much volunteer work in the many activities here will be done also. So, here’s a “hi” and it's mighty good to have such grand people back in Our Town. = Bae ez Aaahhh, ladies—eet ges weeth great plaisure that — hey—you can now have 20% OFF your hair—i_ mean—your permanent wavel The price—natch! And where?—The Adorable Beauty Saison, (Phone 2-2152) 924 Simon- ton Street which is air condition- ed and also, on ONLY Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are making this “hair curling” offer of 20% off on all permanents! Also—the prices on slenderizing treatments at the Adorable have been “thinned” to—"fifteen for sixteen dollars” (instead of the usual twenty five for the course!) === It was al so very © abletely the Am thrilled to tell you too that PLANTERS ARE ALSO REDUC- ED! Yes, the Ditty Box has real- ly let its planters down and that includes the stunning bamboo birdcage ones—the bamboo and basket combination—the triple tied bamboo and other beautiful ones. You'll love the quaint shaped baskets—the practical ones—and last, but not least the GREAT SAVINGS AT THE DITTY BOX! zzz And there was more conversation of how. it all was including cisterns and pumps etc. Gazing at the Washingtonia Robusta which was fan unusual, beautiful and flaring palm, my attention was turned from that and the other lush tropi- cal foliage of many varieties and centered on the Brugmansia vine. Learned that it came from India and was enchanted with the heavy, thick stalk which wound about and around the porch and then it oc- curred to me when I noticed an especially sturdy one with a heavy grasp on the ‘porch support—that that was indicative of my hostess and Our Town—’cause for many years the two have been inter- twined, shall I say — mean that Miss Marie Cappick and Key West are practically synonymous and they both have great charm, cour- tesy and humor. Miss Marie was kind enough to invite me to return and sure am going to do so—’cause she is a wonderful person and yours truly can sure learn many many things —of the people and the past of— Our Town. ty Store, corner Angel val—knows he’s gonna mo still is not sure just where. One thing you can be sure of — there are a variety of savings on a ty of articles (fr instance —20% off on sun caps and hats and small household wares— such ~as~ plastic brooms, and sponge mops are also reduced)— at Einhorn‘’s STOREWIDE CLEARANCE, p.s.—there are cases of bever- ages on which you can save like crazeee at $3.98 and $5.39! ASK JACK ABOUT THESE! 22 22 28 And then there’s the one they’re telling in Our Town — that they plan to add sodium fluoride to the’ DDT spray machine to preserve the enamel on the “choppers” of the mosquitoes! (Honest!—did too hear it!) B= ff Little feet run and romp and sometimes stumble—and they frequently do not know how to take — but, would like te pass the word to you mothers that there is an IDEAL way for you to supervise the shoeing of your progeny. Posner’s shoes, you'll know that Plans Entertainment For Polio Party | Cards, dancing and a floor show make up the entertainment planned by members of Xi Alpha Theta Exemplar Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi for those attending the Cabaret-Card party being heid at the Casa Marina patio on Saturday evening, August 21, at 8 Pp. m. Parents of the children will be contacted and further instructions given as to where the tags may be obtained, and when collections are to be turned in. It is requested that all mothers cooperate to help make this club- sponsored activity a successful one. WATCH YOUR SEAT House paint is not recommen- ded for porch or garden furniture, because house paint is purpose- ly make to chalk gradually and thereby “was” itself. If used on furniture, it may cause you to col- lect the pattern of the seat on your clothing. She reports that her committee’s plans are shaping-up and asks, “Are you proud of your baby?” And Mrs. Sweeting answers that question for you, not only as a mother her- self, but as an experienced person who has served as Baby Contest Chairman for approximately six | years. | She answers, “Naturally, you’re proud of your youngster so be sure to enter your ‘Pride and Joy’ in the annual Baby Show sponsored by St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at} | 4p. m. on Labor Day at the City Park on Truman Avenue.” | Mrs. Sweeting reports that priz- es will be awarded the prettiest girl; handsomest boy; healthiest girl and boy; best dressed girl and || boy. First, second, and third prize- winners will result from each con-|~ test and each winner will receive | _ an award. \f Chairman Sweeting adds that the contest will be in two age groups. The first age group will cover chil- dren from one month to three|* years, inclusive, and the other age| » group will be from three years (plus one day) to six years, in-| clusive. Beautiful loving cups are on the shelves waiting for the prettiest little girls and the handsomest lit- . boys to claim them on Labor ay. Each year there is a rush and waiting line which the Choir Guild members, who are in charge of | the Baby Show, hope all will avoid | by registering children today or soon at the Children’s Corner, Si- monton at Fleming Street, where blanks are available. Merchants of Key West, it seems, welcome news of this annual Baby | Show almost as much as loving | Parents because it means that al-| most all babies’ dresses and shoes purchased at Easter for spring will | be outgrown by the time Labor | Day draws near so folks will go on shopping tours. And as Mrs. Sweeting states, “Tradition has it that parents us- sually buy a little something for themselves after their ‘dee-lights’ are dressed to catch the eyes of all of the patrons of the Baby Show.” Of course, every child is sweet and previous and the judges’ most difficult task is not having a lov- ing cup for each child: however, Key West parents always seem to understand about the number of cups for first prize winners. Many probably leave the affair without a cup but happy in the thought that their little “angel” had two precious feet with which to parade before the judges and | also secure in the knowledge that | many an admiring eye was cast their little one’s way.
