SOCIETY — PERSONALS — NEWS OF INTEREST TO WOMEN Telephone: Citizen Office, 2-5661 SUE JONES, Editor Tuesday, August 10, 1954 THE KEY WEST CITIZEN Greetings! Here’s the thought that you all had a most pleasant week-end. Hope many of you saw the rain Sunday—was at the Sun and Sand and at one point the pre- cipitation was so heavy—that it seemed as if blankets of water had been hung from above and you could scarcely discern: where the Atlantic and the sky met. Yes, in- deed Someone sure put thousands of buckets of water on edge of the upstairs transom and they were overturned simultaneously, and it sure enough did truly rain. I en- joyed it tremendously. Perhaps during the downpour you might have been thinking of shops and of your household needs and where you could save some money ~and let’s pursue that idea to- day. zsepetz Attention, Gentlemen! Have some really good news for you! Globe Shoe Store, 510 Fleming Street are closing out their line of men’s shoes. Because of this, the prices have hit rock bottom —with many pairs being sold at cost and some—way below! While men may not be as in- ferested in style as ladies are— may | say that these are really good looking shoes—with beauti- ful leather and lightweight, turn- ed soles. So, for an excellent shoe buy—turn into the Globe Shoe Store after you see these handsome shoes in the window and realize how much you will save. ze 22 Although ‘all the evenings here have a certain magic, Saturday nights for yours truly have always seemed to be rather special, Guess they are for all of us, but last Sat- urday evening was a most perfect one, and so—I unpeeled the scotch tape and dropped the “Press” sticker on the car window—and took me to a party. Because the hospitality of the host and hostess was, as always, wonderful — and because the surroundings were un- usually beautiful and’ interesting from the viewpoint of—shall we say—previous tenants — and be- cause there was much friendship and enjoyment, should like to tell you all of an unforgettable even- ing. =s=See8 Never seem to tire of telling you how wonderful the A and B Lobster House, 700 Front Street is—‘cause yours truly is very fond of all the kinds of seafood which they specialize in and cook so well. Also, realizing that visitors are constantly arriving in Our Town—sure don’t want them to miss the heavenly water- front view—seen from the A and B Lobster House! 22> 22 Whilst the coffee tables and yard furniture were the same when Harry Truman visited ‘there, and it was sorta fun to think of an ex- President walking about the love- ly grounds and pondering upon af- fairs of State—the charm and per- sonality of Admiral and Mrs. ‘Towner scattered these thoughts. page ae THURSDAY MORNING SPE- CIAL at the Mar Ed Dress Shop, 421-B Duval Street! And this Thursday—‘twill be a surprise! An unusually good selection of the beautiful and lovely dresses found here will be placed on a special rack and REDUCED! There will be assorted sizes and different prices. So, know you'll surely find some good buys here THURSDAY MORNING. Discovered that those excellent strapless “Deala” bras are still being sold for only $2.00 because Mar Ed is tinving this li eo When you're starting to chalk down that second half of the allot-/ ted 3 score and 10 (well—almost | my friends)—it is most flattering and kind to have young people in- clude you “‘in”—so to speak. and so it was that yours truly met and} chatted ‘with those who were there; and had more fun! Ken Fisher and Walter Pierce had on identically patterned shirts—one in red and one in brown and they were pur- chased in—California and Maine— how far apart can shopping get? However, there was good sport | when yours truly got the names mixed—and all evening Ken would be Walter at times and vice versa. However, there was no confusion | as to how pretty Rosemary, Ken's sister, is for she is truly a lovely | lass. Her visit with the beautiful | P+ will soon be over and know) thet there are many who will be sorry to see her leave. Also chat- ted with handsome George, Jr., and Jack Parmer and then moved | along to another group. z= For only ninety the Sun and Sand delicious lunch—Just order the “Businessman’s Special’. Fer instance, today there was a de- licious ham roll with an elegant sauce and it was really good. Because the public is invited —you all can enjoy not only the excellent food but meeting George and Elsie Keyes, who are the marvelous managers of this lovely dining spot—at the edge of the Atlantic—with view unin- terrupted—of the broad and col- orful sweep of the Ocean and Sky — at the Sun and Sand — straight down Simonton and turn LEFT. BEE Whilst it was not a large gather- ing, there was a pleasant combin-| ation of guests from Our Town and Navy couples. Met Admiral Wool- dridge and Admiral Beakley who were visiting. We discussed what tactics should be employed to catch the more elusive fish such as Sail, Marlin, etc. As usual, the fishing had been excellent and they plan- ned another trip the next day. EB SS EE GO SOUTH to get cooll—South to Mexico, that is where the av- erage summer temperature is 71°. However, first let's go to Simone’s Tours, 510 Southard Street and find out more—abeut how to get to Mexico! You know it is near—inexpen- sive to get to and Mexico really offers a great deal for your va- cation time and money! Simone’s will be glad to make your reservations via GUEST AIRWAYS and in five hours and fifty minutes, you can be in Ro- mantic Mexico! Also, any trip planned by Simone’s will be suc- cessful in all respects—reserva- tions, accomodations and sight- seeing (Also, they know hew te travel economically)! f= =ez Paused for a moment to admire the beauty of the sparks shooting upwards from the outdoor grill where chickens were being prepar- ed. Then tried to make friends with “Mr. Charles” the handsome white French,,poodle who, like yours truly, , wandered blissfully about. Had a hunch he wouldn’t talk because he thought I might print it—and believe me—had he spoken—I sure would write of -it! Just Po iilornsticive the twenty beautiful colors of the plastic wall tile at the Key West Floor Covering Co., 132 Duval Street. R. Stowers Co., 533 Duval Street and take a gander at and lend an ear ceived. These are the latest mod- els in both styling and mechan- ism. And some of them are real- ly beauties. Saw a gorgeous Chi- nese Red one with black knob and because Stowers knows that Peoples’ preferences differ—there are other makes ef radios here too. > Saw a handsome Zenith—table model—that “—and the tions” were in long exaggerated numerals. Very modern! Then, whilst yours truly had always thought of ears in con- nection with radios—learned of the “Golden Throat” tone system of the RCA Victors found also at Stowers. Seems as if this is an exclusive feature with RCA Vic- tor and consists of an exacting you can enjoy a complete and i balance of amplifier, speaker and binet, ITEMS OF INTEREST Pee ?| Adon Taft, Former Reporter In Key West, Is Wed In Miami Sunday Miss Alfrieda Joyce Ford of Miami became the bride of Adon Taft, who made a wide circle of friends in Key West when he was reporter here for the Miami Herald, in a ceremony performed Sun- day at 3 p. m. at University Baptist Church, Coral Gables, The Rev. Then I excused myself to phone Joan (as I always check on my young lady) and by the way, noticed that the Little White House has been divided into two sets of living quarters. “When I returned to the gather- ing, received a nice invitation to go dancing and so made my adieus. As I looked back over my shoulder—to see again the lights strung over the yard—the magni- ficent trees — couldn’t help but think of the charming couple who were so kind to include me in such a delightful evening. And may I say—thank you so very much, Ad- miral and Mrs. Towner. ZEEE For a restaurant of great charm and a menu offering a splendid selection of good food try dining at the Banana Tree Grille, 523 Truman Avenue. One unusual specialty of the Banana Tree Grille is the “Swiss Chocolate Pie’ and they do melt in your mouth being that tasty. Recommend this very highly. Then too, in addition to their icy fresh tropical salad plate, they have added a cold shrimp platter. And one thing is for sure—salads at the Banana Tree Grille are always delicious and crisp and perfect for appetites jaded by the heat. ii 22 2 2 And then, with the top down on the convertible—and it in operat- ing condition for a change—drove through Our Town, but my thoughts were not confined to driving. Couldn’t help but realize, again, how very much yours truly loves Key West and too, the really tremendous and vital importance of the Navy and its swell people to Our Town. Am sure that you all will join me in saying how com- pletely respected is Admiral Town- er and the great. and magnificent job he performs—and how grand Mrs. Towner is—and how swell their son and daughter are. £2225 Blissful Buy—Gal 3 If you are tired and weary And life looks teary Give yourself a beauty treat Go to “DONALD‘S”—602 Duval Street = = = There’s wally a pounding of the hammers at the Office today, for the Citizen will soon have a brand new addition—and of course this is really swell, but right now what with the beat of the “anvil” chor- us, am sure any aspirin salesman could do a rushing business amongst the office force. Oh well, it won't be long ‘fore we're large and beautiful and quiet—and Mum- mie always said the smell of tar was healthy! Clutching me aching head—shall leave — for—guess where? Ah yes —the shops and will yours truly ever have a good time! FONDLY YOURS AND MOST SINCERELY TOO—jeannette (Adv’t.) Starting at 7:30 the stu- dents and committee members of the Summer Workshop Program of The Key West Players, will par- ticipate in a buffet supper, sup- plied, served and consumed by said students and members. After the meal, the evening’s lec- ture, by Pat Lowrie, will be on stage make-up. Pat has had con- siderable experience in all depart- ments of little theatre work and is well remembered, locally, for her excellent production of “Lau- ra,” which she directed for the Key West Players. She has consistently heen trying to “duck” make-up assignments, but the Players haven’t been suc- cessful, yet, in finding a satisfac- tory replacement. No doubt, Pat sincerely hopes that an Arden or a Westmore or even a Lon Chan- ey might be discovered in this new class tonight. If time permits, after the make- up lecture and demonstration, there will be a short class in script reading.
