1,000th Phone Is Installed In Keys Today The Key reached a sig- nificant milestone in its tele- phone history today when its 1,000th telephone was in- stalled at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hobson James in Marathon. D. E. Nichols, manager of the Southern Bell Telephone Company, been installed in the past eighteen months. He stated that the rapid increas- es in telephones is clearly indica- tive of the outstanding growth and progress of the Keys. It is significant that the 1,000th telephone was installed in the James home. James and his attractive wife have been vacationing in the Keys for the past five years. Last year 1,471,000 tourists visited our area and each year more and more are staying. Key West with 7,418 telephone installations, gives a clear indica- tion of this recent phenomincal growth of this area since 40 per cent of the installations have oc- curred in the past three and a half years. Nichols advised that Southern Bell, with her mammoth improve- ment and expansion program will continue to keep up and aid the astronomical growth on the Keys, CHINESE BATTLE RAGING FLOODS TOKYO — Peiping radio said today ‘“‘a fierce struggle” is going on between one million peasants and soldiers against raging waters of the flooded Yangtze and Huai rivers in Communist China.
