Page 8 THE KEY WEST CITIZEN FOR FAST QUICK ACTION RESULTS — DIAL 2-566! or 2-5662 Wonder Drug B-12 Is Under Suspicion, Top Medics Reveal BALTIMORE (#—The “wonder vitamin,” B-12 is under suspicion. Johns Hopkins’ scientists suspect B-12 of failing to perform wonders for old folk. And they’re going to give it the third degree at Mary- land ‘Penitentiary. For the last five years, thou- sands of elderly persons have been gulping B-12 at a furious rate, both under doctors’ prescriptions and as the result of patent medicine advertising. Their hope .. . to find renewed vigor. ; But the biochemical cops at Hop- kins have had the wonder vitamin under surveillance. Under direction of Dr. Bacon F. Chow, the biochemists tested B-12 on residents of a nursing home and a group of Hopkins students. They formed two theories: 1, Old folks tend to absorb large quantities of vitamin B-12 when it is given as shots. 2. But they have difficulty in ab- sorbing it—no matter how much they need it—when they take it in pill or liquid form. Dr. Chow said B-12 is an all right vitamin, no question about that; when it comes to aiding per- -sons suffering from anemia and children afflicted with tuberculosis, rheumatic fever and the like. In children, the vitamin has proved it can aid growth and gen- eral well-being. And it’s a-help to the old folks when it’s absorbed. Film Is Based On Powerful Conrad Story | Based on a powerful short story by Joseph Conrad, “Laughing Anne,” Republic’s new production, produced and directed by Herbert Wilcox, reached the screen of the Monroe Theatre Sunday in a blaze of romance, comedy, lilting melo- dies and magnificent Technicolor. This outstanding picture co-stars Wendell Corey, Margaret Lock- wood, Forrest Tucker and Ronald Shiner. The gripping and unusual story conerns a red-héaded beauty of the eighteen-eighties, whose laugh won her the title of Laughing Anne (Margaret Lockwood). She was the idol of the elegant Parisian night-club where she sang. Heavy- weight fighter Jem Farrell was her | 4° lover, a part brilliantly played by Forrest Tucker. Jem won the fight ‘that should have led him to the meeting with the world-famous John L, Sullivan but crooks, who had sought to fix the fight, fixed him instead. In the ensuing bat- tle, Farrell is so hurt that Laugh- ing Anne realizes that he will never fight again. They both drift to the Eastern seas where Laughing Anne becomes a singer in the sor- did Javanese bars. . It is here that she meets David- son (Wendell Corey), a master of a trading schooner and stows away on his ship, bound for Singapore. During the voyage Davidson begs Laughing Anne to marry him, but her sense of loyalty forces her to leave the ship and return to Far- rel. Years later, Davidson, on official business, comes across Laughing Anne in a lonely, hot, steamy jungle settlement. The Woman with the Laugh has sunk in squalor and, although she is still with Far- rell, she has a little boy named Davy with her. Farrell and a gang of crooks endeavor to* intervene in David- son’s mission, but Laughing Anne warns Davidson of his danger and during a chase and gun fight, Laughing Anne is killed. Outstanding performances are given by the four stars, who are supported by a fine array of fea- ture names. Producer-director Herbert Wil- cox has achieved a cinematic triumph, and the greatest success of his magnificent career should not be missed. Lie Detector Clears Man In Wife’s Death BALTIMORE — George W. Eller. 49, of Parkville, Md., was cleared yesterday of any guilt in the death of his wife after taking the first official lie-detector test given in Baltimore County. His wife, 37-year-old Mrs. Myrtle Eller, was killed early Wednesday morning: Eller told police he mis- took her for a prowler at their home on the northeast edge of Baltimore. BEAUTIFUL CORAL HOTEL EFFICIENCY APTS. Summer rates, $18.50 Sere lent for 2 or 3 people. Cool and . Maid_ service. rg ‘ost Office. Tel. 2-8604 The trouble with the experiments that led to formation of the theo- ries was that the nursing home residents and the Hopkins students live vastly different lives. That could affect the results, Dr. Chow said. . Only in prison, he said, can sci- entists find large numbers of indi- viduals—young, middle-aged and old—who eat the same food, sleep about the same hours and follow similar routines of work and recre- ation. Sixty prisoners have volunteered to help with the experiments. Dr. Chow said that if the theo- ries are upheld, researchers will be faced with two possibilities. Either B-12 will have to be given to older people by injection or scientists will have to discover something that would help them absorb the vitamin when taken in pill or liquid form. The idea of the whole experi- ment is to get vitamin B-i2 into the body of the old folks where it can work its wonders. “We are trying to add life to years,” said Dr. Chow, “not just years to life. We are not interested in putting people on rocking chairs for long years. We want them to work and enjoy life.” LEGAL NOTICES sane ee ot Chapter 20723 — Acts of 1941 NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that Emma Neal Ayala Molder of County Tax Certificate No, 194 issued the First day of June, A.
