Mrs. Marion Thorne, on the wit- ness stand yesterday for the second straight day, testified her 20-year- old son had been blackmailed. and told McCarron ihe- identity of the Person or persons “will come out and you will certainly be sur- prised.” However, under direct question- ing, she admitted she had no di- rect knowledge of blackmail. Henry Kalcheim, an attorney for Mrs. Thorne, promised a ‘“bomb- shell” at resumption of the in- quest next Wednesday. He said the “truth” would be brought out then. McCarron demanded that Kel- cheim testify under oath about whatever information he had. Kel- cheim refused on grounds of legal priviledge. Another attorney for Mrs. Thorne, Bartlett S. Marimon, said they were conducting their own in- {| vestigation inc onnection with young Thorne’s death. “We do not have all the facts, but we will preseré them in good time,” Marimon said. McCarron then told Mrs. Thorne’s § | attorneys to make good their prom- ise to bring forth their evidence t | bearing on the cause of the youth’s death. Recalled to testify yesterday was Maureen Regan, 18, young Thorne’s fiancee "and chief benefi- ciary in his will to an estate esti- mated at nearly two million dol- lars. She testified she and Thorne were to have been married in De- cember, after his 21st birthday, be- cause then his mother “would not be able to interfere or make trou- ble any more.” It was the first time that Mrs. Thorne and Miss Ragen and Miss Ragen’s mother, Mrs. Aleen Ra- gen, had appeared at the inquest at the same time. Mrs. Thorne, who has denied her son was engaged to the pretty blonde Maureen, at one time in her testimony looked -at the girl and her mother and: said: “I'll fight each and-every one of you to the | end.” Thorne, who was ‘found dead June 19 in a $75-a-month room, had revised his will 10 days earli- er, making Miss Ragen and her Enjoy at new low price! She also testified Thorne always was short of funds, that he complained jhe did not get along with his mo- ther and that his mother did not love him. Red Newspaper Complains Of Religious Trend By RICHARD KASISCHKE MOSCOW (—Can you imagine how the secretary of a Young Communist League committee could backslide so far that she would get married in a church? This happened recently at Nku- ha, a city of considerable size down near Baku, capital of the Azer- baijan Republic. And the news- paper Baku Worker made it the point of a major article to increase the anti-religious drive of Soviet youth. These articles have been appear- ing more and more frequently in the Moscow press as well as in provincial papers. Anti-religious drive has to be increased because churches appear to be making in- roads, especially with the youth. Baku Worker’s complaint stated: “A long procession was moving | from the house of the bride to the house of the bridegroom. In the first car Sat the bride, with an ot lamp and mirror in her hands, ac- cording to Oriental custom. In the other cars were many friends of the bride and the bridegroom. “Then they all went to the city cemetery, where is the grave of a ‘holy Mohammed.’ The cars stopped and the caretaker of the | grave began to read a prayer. .. | “It is not the first time that marriages have been blessed by his man and that young girls and men have followed these ancient prejudices. “But this time it was even more serious—the secretary of the Young Communist League committee and | her husband, who himself is a teacher in one of our institutes!” Floating dry docks have been in Thursday, July 8, 1954 His Income Tax.” one of the today. White Australia Policy Followed CANBERRA, Australia (#—Im- migration Minister Harold Holt has reiterated Australia’s determina- tion to retain restrictive immigra- tion—the “white Australia” policy.
