Dietsch, who has lived in Key West 17 years and has been in hotel business for 40 years, bought the land in 1943. It has been a long time since Dietsch worked as a waiter—his last such job was in 1938 and 1939 as assistant head waiter at the Casa Marina—but. he recalls the immediate pre-World War I pe- riod in New York City when cab- arets were reaching their peak. This was from 1911 to 1914. It was then that he worked at such famous restaurants, hotels | and ¢abarets as Reisenweber’s, Jack’s, Churchill’s, Shanley’s, Rec- tor’s, Healy’s Golden Glades, the old Knickerbocker Hotel at 42nd Street and Broadway and the Her- mitage Hotel near 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue. . Knows Celebrities It was at the Hermitage that he knew such Broadway stars as the late Will Rogers, Eddie Cantor and Al Jolson. Another celebrity that Dietsch knows well is Ernest Hemingway. “When I was working at the Casa Marina in 1938.and 1939,” Dietsch says, “I also catered for Hemingway at his home here.” It was during that period that| Dietsch had a chance to buy the | Property at 805-811 Simonton Street. “I didn’t know anything about real estate,” Dietsch said, “so I thought I'd ask Hemingway about the buy.” He recalls that Hemingway told | him: “I don’t know anything about | real estate, either, but I like Key West and my friends like Key West.” Becomes a Key Wester “That was good enough for me,” Dietsch said, so I bought the pro- | perty in 1939.” | And he bought it just in time, too.
