GRUESOME DISPLAY OF BODIES INGUATEMALA SICKENS SPECTATORS By JACK RUTLEDGE ‘GUATEMALA —Handkerchiefs to their noses, a long line of men, women and teen-agers filed past a Tew of mutilated bodies in tropical Guatemala’s capital today. smell of death was overpow- curious porulace lifted statue of Christ loomed behind the coffins, candles burning at its side. The gruesome display was part of the drive by Guatemala’s new government against Arbenz’s Com- munist backers, who sparked the terror wave which preceded his downfall and who now are reported stirring up peasant opposition to his conquerors. . In the weeks just before and aft- er Col. Carlos Castillo Armas’ “lib- eration” army of exiles invaded from neighboring Honduras, the po- . {lice rounded up hundreds of anti- vomited at the stench. Six of these, brought in yester- day from the little village of Villa Lobos, were typical. After several days of working over by the po- lice, they were machine-gunned on June 24 and left in a shallow grave. All were men. Their bodies were purple from beating, slashed and cut by floggings. Eyes were gouged out and teeth were kicked in. The groins had been a favorite target. Each man’s hands were tied be- hind him. Why they were tortured was not known. Probably they had refused induction into the army of Ppeas- ants Arbenz tried to recruit to fight the onrush by Castillo Armas’ in- surgens, the hastily armed farm- ers who now are threatening what- ever regime the rebel chief and the current military government set up. Possibly they were just overly active against the Communists, who were strong in the Villa Lobos area. Anyway, they are dead, hor- Tibly so. In Guatemala City, most victims of the police were Opponents of Arbenz’s Communist backers, Many of their bodies already have been recovered—tossed in front of their homes or left in the streets. Ambassador To Paraguay Is Open By FRED L. strozieER ASUNCION, Paraguay — A U. S. government job worth $15,000 a year and allowances is going begging. It is the post of ambassador to this nee eas American na- tion. The Job has i eet Gee been vacant since In recent years most of the work has fallen on a series of counsel- ors of embassy—Archbald Ran- dolph, John Shillock and now Da- vid H. Maynard. But they have lacked the rank to deal most ef- fectiyely with tough problems. Wealthy U. S. campaign contrip- utors looking for a likely embassy quickly pass over Asuncion after one hurried look at the State De- partment’s report on the post. The capital has a bare 300,000 popula- tion and the nation only 1,200,000. There is almost no public enter- tainment, no good hotel, no. good restaurant. Water comes from private wells, and there is no pub- lic sewage disposal system. Elec- tricity and automatic telephones function irregularly. Mail, radio- telegraphic and telephone commu- nications to other countries are slow. _ To fill such an unattractive post in a hot, sea-level community, the State Department May have to draft an unwilling career man for the ambassador’s job. Paraguay is friendly to Uncle Sam, who has Poured funds into the country for a tuberculosis hos- pital and for valuable farm pro- jects to help raise the nation’s low standard of living. This friendship has stood the strain of a violent April _Tevolution, the subsequent selection of a provisional president and the nomination of a new strong-man general, Alfredo Stroessner, for the remainder of the presidential term, CELEBRATION FEAST | MAKES COPS SICK | TAURA, Japan W—Police in this small town celebrated the national- | ization of Japan’s police forces | yesterday with oshiruko, a tradi-| tional New Year’s dish made with | sweet red beans. | But what’s good in January isn’t | always so good in July.
