Mrs, Smith told officers that her kianaper had said he was dying of cancer and “pulled the job so I can have one last fling.” The kidnaping was- replete with bizarre elementu. The ransom note was placed in the side pocket of Smith’s golf bag, which was left at a desert service station. A note of instructions on payment of the ransom was delivered tc Smith’s home in a bouquet of roses. Two other notes were left under piles of rocks which designate mining claim boundaries. She was let out when they reached the mountains, Smith’s first information that his wife had been kidnaped came in 2 telephone call to his office at 4:40 p.m. Wednesday. A man’s voice told him: “Know where Apache Junction is? You can pick up your golf clubs at the Chevron service station. Ed’s Place,’ one-half mile from there. You will find a_ note.” Smith said his clubs had been in the trunk of his-~wife’s car. He telephoned home, learned his wife was not there and notified police. The ransom note told Smith to go to Apache Junction, 32 miles east of Phoenix, at 2 p.m. yester- day and telephone his home for instructions. When he called, the instructions in the bouquest note were given him. Smith told officers he drove as directed and found a note under a tock monument at the highway’s edge, 8% miles southeast of the junction. It directed him up a dirt road ¢o another piece of “rock. There he found another note which told him to get out and walk and take the money with him. Smith said that after walking about four miles he heard his wife scream. As he dropped the valise containing the money and started toward. his wife, a masked man jumped up. and sent a rifle shot whistling over his head. A little later the masked man permitted Smith to join his wife. Smith drove his wife home. Until word of Mrs. Smith’s safety |was received, newspapers, news services and radio stations had cooperated with a police and FBI request that they remain silent about the kidnaping for fear an alarmed abductor might kill his captive. “Sabre Jet” Is Based On News Story A newspaper article that came to the attention of an enterprising film producer a year ago is the <-. |Science Fiction Adventure Film | To Be At Monroe “Creature From The Black La- goon” Universal - International’s science «fiction adventure schedul- ed to open June 13 at the Monroe Theatre, set i Sparel i” underwa- ter photography by ming. 152 Scenes below the surface of the water. BOTH PARTIES |Signs CLAIM CREDIT By JOE HALL WASHINGTON — Republicans and Democrats alike today vied in claiming credit for a sweeping social security liberatlization plan which seems headed for over- whelming congressional approval. The measure broadening social security coverage and boosting benefits swept through the House for public hearings before the Sen- ate Finance Committee. An advance check of committee members today indicated Republi- cans and Democrats will try to out- do one another in eagerness to support it. Both sides agree that passage of the measure is one of the most politically popular moves Congress can make in this. election year. And Republicans say the chief ad- vantage will fall to them, because President Eisenhower put the bill jhigh on his 1954 legislative pro- gram and the GOP controls Con- gress. Eisenhower renewed his plea for the measure in a televised speech on his legislative program last night, declaring that the “goal for every American” includes ‘‘a rea- sonable assurance . . . against in- security in old age.” However, Sen, George of Georgia senior Democrat on the Finance Committee, said in an interview social security “is a Democratic party program.” He said Senate Democrats will back fully the 1954 liberalization of the system” just as we did in 1950 and other years.” Sen. Carlson (R-Kan), a mem- ber of the committee, said enact- ment of the measure will be a big talking point for his party in the fall elections. The bill as passed by the House would add 10 million persons to the 70 million already on the so- cial security rolls. It also would boost benefits by a minimum of $5 monthly for those already get- ting payments and as much as $31.25 a month for a family in the \ future, Overseas Transportation Company, Ine. The newspaper piece ‘old about the wives of Sabre.Jet pilots who, stationed in Japan with their hus- bands, kissed their men goodbye after breakfast each morning, then gathered at the airfield gates in the late afternoon, anxiously wait- ing to see if their loved ones had returned from the deadly combat in the embattled skies over Korea. The producer is Carl Krueger, who makes his debut as a produ- cer of full-length features with “‘Sa- bre Jet.” He is also credited with collaboration in writing the original screenplay, along with veteran screen writers Dale and Katherine Eunson. Starred in the film, pho- tographed in color, are Robert Stack, Coleen Gray, Richard Ar- len, Julie Bishop and Leon Ames, The featured cast includes such players as Lucille Knoch, Kathleen Crowley, Jerry Paris and Tom Trish. : “Sabre Jet” was directed by the ace Hollywood veteran, Louis King. Much of the picture was filmed on location at Nellis Air Base, in Nevada, principal training ground for Jet combat pilots. Officials at the base, as well as at Air Force headquarters in Washington, coop- erated to the fullest extent with producer Krueger in filming the picture. The climax of “Sabre Jet” fea- tures the largest formation of jets ever assembled in the air at the same time. Although the exact number of planes is a military sec- ret, it was no secret that the sky over the base was clouded with speeding Sabres. Flying with wing- tips almost touching, the jet for- mation streaked over a set rep- resenting a Mig air base, and drop- ped hundreds of napalm and high explosive bombs.
