“Cleanswept” was, I thought a bona fide word. However, with the uncertain aid of my anaemic Web- ster (abridged edition) and the Dict. of Synonyms (newly acquir- ed)—can find no evidence that it is! Pe my recollection of it harks *k to a Pennsylvania Dutch ancestry—it is probably a similar to “reddy- ing up the room”. In’ any event, reckon I really shouldn’t worry too much about its origin, for in this day and time of “high power- ed advertising” (be this treason?) —all the imaginative and also ordinary words have been called into play to describe and also sell —“the state of cleanliness’. On the other hand — no one, with perhaps the exception of Thoreau—could describe nature’s own ablutions—the remaining brante of color—the freshness in- duced by the multiple bristles of a heavy rain—the absolute’ purity of the foliage this early eve. First off, his position is an “elective” one, with the Cuban people of Our Town doing the voting. Then, because the building is one of the most interesting in Our Town—asked about the history of the San Carlos. The Institute was founded in 1871 by Cuban emi- grants, and the first, building was located on Ann Street. The second was a small struc- ture erected in the present loca- tion. When it was torn down, a three-story building was erected. This was damaged by fire and really fixed by the hurricane of 1919. . Eventual condemnation by the city authorities caused it to be demolished. The present edifice was built in October 10, 1924. The previous building had been erected by funds raised from public subscrip- tions—donated by Key Westers and Cubans.
