Then we may well say: ‘Sen. Mc- Carthy, you are truly a great American.’” — Letter in Detroit Free Press. “For years I have been a great isc jadmirer of Sen. McCarthy, but thanks to.the TV hearings T have discovered that he is just a jump- ing jack, a publicity hound.” — Letter in Chieago Tribune. Callers to the TV stations seldom express opinions on the hearings or personalities as such, but usual- ly are vehement in declaring the proceedings should bé telecast. ABC and Du Mont are the only networks carrying the hearings “live.” ABC says it has received ‘‘an un- precedented volume of letters from all sections of the country, lauding the continued and complete cov- erage of the sessions.” : WOKY, only Milwaukee TV sta- tion carrying the hearings “live,” reports it received 15,000 phone calls, letters and telegrams the first week, most of them compli- menting the coverage. The NBC station in Los Angeles, KNBH, said it received about 4,000 }} calls, most-of them protesting, in the four days after NBC dropped its live coverage. |Explanation By i the senator. sentiment was polled lers indicated: Neutrality about the all but disappeared. Robert Fearon, associated with Delia Falide, shipping agent here, said he had talked with the motor vessel Rio Sixaola and was told the fire on the Caravel was put out with little damage to the |: vessel. ST. PETERSBURG #—America was near active participation in the war in Indochina just a few weeks ago, Sen. Smathers (D-Fla) told the American Legion Florida department at its annual conven- tion yesterday. © “When the story is finally writ- ten, it will be seen that America actually took the leap but turned back in mid-air only after the in- tercession of three or four great American iots,” i . “In the light of what almost happened, the statement -is reassuring. “It is well to remember that the President is the com- mander in chief of the armed forc- es and he can send them wherever and whenever he likes.” Smathers said that if the ques- tion is put to Congress, “‘based on the few facts I have today—and one of the criticisms of this ad- ministration is that the Congress is given very few facts—I would not vote to send our troops into the steaming jungles of Indo- china.” Smathers told Legionnaires’ he regards the Indochina incident as a “brush fire war” and added: | “Total war, when it arrives, will ' be savage, devastating and sud- den. We will not have time for long mobilization and training or even for producing. “Our survival and our victory will depend almost entirely on the ‘force in being’ not only to am- munition and bombs and guns but in manpower as well.” | He called Yor universal military training, restoring the five billion dollar Air Force budget cut and a faster stockpiling of war ma- terial. Smathers said America’ should cultivate friends in latin America where “things are going badly for us now.” He proposed a united front of TURN OUT THE VOTE Bill Neblett has conducted a magnificent campaign. He has out-maneuvered Jim Franklin in every nook and cranny of the 24th Senatorial District. Franklin has been squirming and wriggling try- ing desperately to evade the damning array of facts that our Bill jhas marshalled against him. But # is a hopeless struggle for Jim. Hopeless because it is impossible for him to overcome the will of the people. The voters of this senatorial district voted 2 to 1 against Franklin in the first primary. Since then our Bill has continued to 'grow in stature in the eyes of the voters while Franklin has dwindled to stich an extent that the people no longer refer to him as Senator. They speak of him as “that corporation lawyer.” The title “Sen- ator” has a special significance for the people, When you are a senator you are a representative of the people. Franklin lost. his claim to this honorable title when he quit serving the people. Yes, he is a big corporation lawyer, so the voters are going to relieve him of his obligations to them. He can now serve the corporations with- out the hindrance of a gnawing conscience, After Franklin's defeat on May 25th, he may shed a few tears. However, those many greenbacks he has amassed will give him solace. And those tears won't overexert his lachrymose glands, as he hasn't had time to weep in the last 12 years, being too busily engaged in the pleasant pursuit of moneymaking. The big corpora- | tions pay their faithful servants well. If anyone has had cause to i cry, it has been the people of the 24th senatorial district. The ; frightful neglect they have received from Jim Franklin is enough | to have their bootless cries resounding throughout the émpty cor- ridors of twelve fruitless years. Under similar circumstances a crocodile would shed genuine tears. But our Bill Neblett has portrayed Franklin in his true light. Bill presented the voters with facts. Facts that could not be de- nied. In order to subdue Franklin, Bill needed no other weapon than truth. It has been said that the truth shall set you free. Well, the truth has certainly set Franklin free—free of his senate seat! Our Bill is a natural gogetter. Four months ago the voters of Lee, Hendry and Collier counties had never heard of Bill Neblett, Now his name has become the magic password to better govern- ment throughout these three counties. Bill’s charm, native intel- ligence and rousing ability has captivated them. Bill did not have to resort to abracadabra or chicanery. Those methods were Frank- lin’s forte. Yes, our Bill Neblett has won the people of the mainland coun- ties, As far as they are concerned Bill is their new senator. These people know that Bill won't feed at the public trough. They know that Bill was reared on the religious precept that those who serve man serve God best. Bill’s entire background is a shining testimon- ial to this precept. Bill could never hoodwink the people. His de- sire to serve his fellow man isn’t a newly-acquired trait. Bill's mis- sionary father inculcated this trait in Bill’s character early in Bill's life. Bill's impressionable years were spent observing his father’s activities as a man of God and as a servant of mankind. Yes, our Bill's desire to serve us springs from his heart. And such a natural desire when reinforced by intelligence and ability make Bill a cogent personality. No wonder the people of the mainland counties have flocked to his support. Auld Clootie is aware that you good people of Monroe County recognize Bill’s sterling virtues. After all, Bill is no stranger to us. Nevertheless, I stress these points so that you will be inspired to turn out the vote! If the people of Monroe County, through apathy, or neglect, or indifference, do not come out in sufficient numbers to vote for Bill Neblett, the menace of a Franklin victory is possible. After all, Franklin is a machine politician. The big corporations are solidly arrayed behind him. Special interests will do everything possible to defeat Bill Neblett. Neblett is the people's choice, but if the people do not turn out to vote, then all of Bill's efforts will have been in vain, Franklin's goose will be cooked only if the people turn out fo light the fire. 3 The hirelings of the machine politicians will be most active on election day, The only way the people can counteract their vote and influence is by turning out to vote. Rest assured that Bill Neblett will be our new senator by going to the polls tomorrow. Let's give ourselves a break. We are des- Perately in need of the type of representation that Bill will give us. We cannot have it if we do not iurn out the vote; Auld Clootie will be on the job on May 25th. If you want Auld Clootie to drive you to the polls, just phone 2-8693, In the meantime be on the alert. Get your neighbors and friends to turn out to vote, too. We must strike while the iron is hot! : AULD CLOOTIE. Flown Out Of | Fallen Fortress | HANOI, Indochina #—Lt. Gene- vieve de Galard Terraube, the heroic nurse of Dien Bien Phu, arrived by plane today and said she was.in good health. She flew beleaguered Dien Bien Phu March 27 to aid the wounded and was unable to leave ‘because of rebel: advances. She remained, tending her hundreds of charges, until the fortress was overrun May 7, the only woman in the post. ig Although prisoner, she was per- mitted to remain at Dien Bien Phu to do her work until freed today. More than 400 of the wounded men in the fort have been flown out ahead of her. The attractive young French air force nurse posed for press and television photographers. “I have nothing to say and I’ve made up my mind about that,” she told reporters.
