Mrs. Grossinger, Owner Of Famous | Resort, Enjoys Key West Visit i Jennie Grossinger came to Key“West not. as the owner of the | most fabulous of all resorts, Grossinger’s in the. Catskill Mountains ij | in New York State, but to visit her "| Mrs. David Ettess, and their two chil and son-in-law, Dr. and . Dr. Ettess is stationed at Like her “children” she loves Key West, and thoroughly enjoy- ed her stay at the Caéa Marina: Ste plans to leave for the north next week and summer at.the famous hotel that started nearly for- ty years ago because her parents wanted a “little place in the coun- try.” ct lt a a iA Mrs. Grossinger told how she went with h¢r mother and father to help them get ‘“‘settled” dnd how when they realized that most of their neighbors took in summer guests “only in those days they called them summer boarders, we took in boarders, too.” ‘Thé first “Grossinger’s” was, shé Says, “primitive, wi running water in the brook.” The venture proved so success- grown from a_ relatively modest summer hotel to a resort, with everything from a private airport to-riding stables and a golf course. Thére’s an artifical outdoor ice- skating rink, and its not unusual to skating while others play tenpis. ree Mea ieee of the resort is due to Jennie Gros- singer. She simply says, “I take Pleasure in the hotel and I love to eater to people.” And when she says, “I always feel that our guests are a part of us,” is is obvious that no matter how big the resort has grown, ‘almost without being aware of it,” or how famous the guests — and they are legion’ — that she means just what she says. Jennie Grossinger was born in Austria and was brought to this country when she was eight years old. She isn’t “proud” of the suc- cess of Grossinger’s — she is “grateful because America is the only place where such an oppor- tunity would be possible.” She looks forward to another visit to Key West, but it is easy to see that as a devoted “grandma,” she looks forward even more to the time when Dr. Ettess’ tour of duty in the Navy is over and he re- sumes his practice in nearby Fer | }} i dale and she can see more of those two grandchildren. ¢ << ® eo eee RESORT OWNER—Jennie Grossinger, whose Catskill M resort is the mecca for famous theatrical and sports ties, wis a recent visitor to Key West.
