VX-1 Downs Sonar School Sofitballers Between DeWitt “Daddy” Roberts’ two hit pitching and John Lewis’ timely hitting, the Dairy’ Queen Blizzards chilled Coca Cola, 6-2, for their third straight win in the first game of a softball doubleheader at Bayview Park last night. John Lewis, brother of Joe Lew- is, who was on the hill for Coca Cola, carried his own personal wudge against his brother when xe tripled to lead off the second ining. After Joe Lewis struck out sob Santana, Roberts flied deep to enter to drive in the first run. In :he third, the Blizzards really low- ered the boom on Joe Lewis. Singles by Al Pazo and Bobby Las- tres sandwiched between an out and Earl Smith’s infield hit netted ihe Blizzards two more runs. John ‘Lewis followed with a homer over right field wall to give Dairy a 5-0 lead. The Blizzards pleted their scoring in the fif- th when John Lewis continued his personal offense on his brother by driving one of his curve balls over the right centerfield wall for his second homer. After being held hitless for 5 inn- ings, Coca finally broke Rob- rts spell in the sixth and scored two infield hits by Bunsy Villareal, ind Bobby Brown coupled with an error’and a wild pitch and a walk. Roberts, who went all the way for the Dairy Queen for his first vin, struck out 5 and walked 3. joe Lewis went all the way for Joca Cola struck out 3 and walked Wo. John Lewis led the hitting with a perfect night. Against his bro- ther, not his cousin, he collected a siple and two homers. in three trips to the plate driving in three runs for a fairly good night at the Plate, The win increased the Dairy Queen’s lead to two full games. In the nightcap, VX-1 finally got into the win column with a 6-3 win over Sonar School. Hatold Sch- midt went all the way for VX-1 allowing four hits, striking out 8 two. Es The Flyers came up with two runs in the first inning on a hit batsman, a double by Tom Fink, a single by Wayne Pigg, and a dou- ble by Barney Parker. They add- ed two more in the third without the aid of a hit. A walk, an error, an infield out, and a wild pitch produced the two tallies for the Flyers. Sonar scored one in the first when Ray Dowen beat out an in- field hit, moved around on a field- er’s choice and a passed ball and scored on Jim Nelson’s sacrifice fly to short right. __ The Flyers picked up two more in the fifth on two hits, an error, and an outfield fly. Sonar came back in their half of the fifth and scored another run on two walks and an error. They completed their scoring in the sixth when Mickey Wertz, Sonar leftfielder, Hustling Tom Fink led the Flyers attack with a double and a single in three tries, Pigg chipped in with two singles in two official trips to aid the Flyers offense. A season ticket, good for eight games, will sell for $7.00. This announcement was made at the meeting of the Quarter- back club held last night in the office of the club’s president, Earl R, Adams, Circuit Court Clerk. To Purchase Equipment The Quarterbackers voted to buy and donate to the Athletic De- partment of the school a Vibra-Whirl hydrotherapy bath and a7- man charging sled. About all that has been done to the room is that it receiv- ed a new paint job, a new door with a lock, a small service bar and a few chairs. Much work still has to be done to make it the type of place that was planned. Of course without the help of the Le- gionnaires this will never mater- ialize. If you don’t want the room then let’s call the thing off and save what money we can on it. If you want it, then why not work a little on getting it shaped up? If you don’t know what has to be done or want to know what you can do then you can contact either of two people: Carl Sawyer, Chair- man of the House Committee or Paul Mesa, Jr., Chairman of the Building Committee. Both of these Legionnaires can tell you what still must be done. * * Membership: This is almost the biggest sore spot of the year. Our membership work has come to an almost com- plete stop and nothing has been done about it. We are over 100 members short of our last year’s total. This is bad in more ways than one but it can be straighten- ed out with a little work from all concerned. How about doing your share and getting some of the fel- lows back that have sort of stray- ed away. There are some new ve- terans too that haven’t been ap- proached about joining. Try some of them. With only a month left to serve as Post Commander, I be- lieve each and every one of us owe it to Bethel P. Johnson, to bring in a 100 per cent membership before he goes out of office. The™Braves won even though they lost one of the most prolonged arguments of the season. A sey- enth-inning drive by Eddie Math bounced off a railing atop the cenfér field fence and fell back on the.-field. Um| Bill Engelin ruled it a doublezsince Mathews got only as far as second before the Dodgers umpire Bill Summers called it @ home run and waved Mathews in. The Dodgers screamed. The four umpires huddled. The Braves screamed. But in the end Mathews was sent back to second. Despite the ruling, the drive scored Danny O'Connell from first base with Milwaukee’s second run. The first came on Joe Adcock’s home run. Elsewhere in the National ly|League the New York Giants de- feated Cincinnati 5-4 and Philadel- phia edged Chicago 8-7 in 10 inn- ings.
