Circulating Freshwater Swimming Pool At Marine Motel Nears Completion NEW POOL—Here is a view of the partially completed fresh- ‘water swimming pool that is under construction at the Marine Motel, 1325 Simonton Street. pects the job to be completed Citizen Staff Photo, Karns, Melvin Levitt, motel owner, ex- about the end of this month.— New Interior Wall Decorating Method Combines Color, Design A fascinating new departure in the world of home decoration has been revealed by The Sherwin- Williams Co, of Cleveland and its allied companies - Acme: Qaulity Paints, Inc., The Lowe Brothers Co., John Lucas and Co., and The Martin - Senour Co. the design roller in the process of application. Anyone Can Do It “This modern method of applica- ion results in a blending of color jand design, even in inexperienced hands,” said Ray H. Hookway, head of the Sherwin - Williams It is a unique method to create Decorative Studios. “In each of us interesting designs on walls by there is a bit of the creative art- means of a twin roller. The meth- ist, a desire for decorative color od includes the use of a new pro- duct, Super Kem-Tone Applikay, which contains materials that were laboratory curiosities a year ,or two ago. Applikay has an opalescent sheen that gives a silk - brocade effect when viewed from various angles. The material comes ready -. to- use in eight translucent colors: Sapphire Blue, Moonmist White, Spun Gold, Silvery Gray, Crystal Green, Frosty Lilac, Radiant Pink and Medallion Yellow. Applikay in all colors is completely washable when dry. New Frontier in Decor “Applikay and the tethnique of application represents a wholly new frontier in attractive and eco- nomical decoration for the home,” commented President Arthur W. Steudel of Sherwin Williams. “Home decorating counsellors who were given a preview of Applikay were unanimously enthusiastic. It has been acclaimed similarly by home builders and architects.” Designs are applied to surfaces first coated with Super Kem-Tone, the washable latex base wall paint brought out by Sherwin - Williams and allied companies in 1950. A chemical affinity exists between Applikay and Super Kem-Tone. Their formulations establish a bond which results in both proper adhesion and complete washabil- ity. A double roller is employed. Joined on a single handle are a fabric covered roller and a molded plastic roller on which the design is embossed. The fabric roller picks up the Applikay from a paint tray and distributes it evenly over and interesting design. This new method fulfills the desire for new decorative effects which Mr. and j Mrs. America are constantly seek- ing.” The Applikay colors may be ap- plied in any of five designs. These are called: Jackstraw, Falling Fea- ther, Birchbark, Homespun and Silken Fleece. Each design is em- bossed on its own plastic roller so that it repeats itself with every roll over the wall surface. ; These designs are non-direction- al, capturing the texture theme so popular with homemakers. Since the designs are not geometric; it is not necessary to match their lines while applying Applikay. Taking into account the hundreds of shades in which Super Kem- Tone is available as the wall back- ground color, it is possible to create almost countless effects with Applikay’s designs and col- ors, Combination of Designs Combinations of the designs may be used to achieve individualized effects. Some designs and combina- tions. lend themselves to interest- | ing decor by cross-rolling the wall surface, vertically and horizontal- ly. Combining Applikay colors, one ‘upon the other, also is strikingly ! effective. Rollers with different designs are readily interhcange- } able on the Applikay roller frame. Applikay can be applied over Super Kem-Tone after this latex aint has dried as briefly as one jhour. This assures a perfect weld- ing of the two types of materials and there by provides unlimited washability. The average room in a home, re- | Bar and The Maxwell Co., Inc. Job Figures In U.S. Indicate Lack Of Confidence In Future By NORMAN WALKER WASHINGTON # — The govern- ment’s latest job figures indicated today the main trouble with the nation’s economy may be a lack of business and consumer confi- dence in the immediate future. Business and consumers alike are investing heavily in the long- term future. The booming con- struction industry is an indication of that. Business is spending heavi- ly on new plants and equipment, consumers are continuing to buy new homes. But a Labor-Commerce Depart- ment survey on April employment showed yesterday that major trou- ble spots in the economy are the factories, the mines and the trans- portation field. 7 This report said pwemploy- ment was 60,600, ~hearly half a million from March and that unemployment»had dropped } from 260,000 from“Wfarch to an April total of 3,465;000/"This con- forms to seasonal, experience. However, the number of factory jobs continued to drop last month, with a decrease of 250,000 from March and 1,350,000 below a year ago. Mining: employment was 23,000 under March and 100,000 un- der last year. There was a 15,000 gain in transportation employment in April, but the level still was 200,000 below a year ago. A top government economist reasons the situation this way: Consumers, worried about how ee quiring probably less than a quart of Applikay material can be coat- ed with Super Kem-Tone and Appli- kay for approximately $15, includ- ing the cost of the application e- quipment. Applikay comes ready-to-use except for stirring. No thinner is required. The application technique is simple. After coating the fabric roller in the paint tray. place the design roller against the wall. Then simply draw the roller down or. across the wall. The Applikay rollers are easily cleaned with soap and water. This affects sales of such things as autos, refrigerators, |TV sets and so on. Manufacturers of such items, noting slackened demand, are keeping. stocks low. This is de- | pressing factory activity and jobs. This in turn has lowered demand for coal, steel and other raw ma- terials, reducing employment in | those industries. Lower factory output and pro- duction of raw materials then have affected the transportation industry, where there have been heavy railroad layoffs. The rest of the economy seems to be thriving. . : The Labor-Commerce report showed an encouraging employ- ment pickup in farming, trade, construction and other seasonal activities. Consumers apparently are will- ing to spend on day-to-day needs at the grocery and department store, but seem unwilling to take on one and two-year installment plan obligations. Government economists say pri- vately that sooner or later either steadiness of the trade-construc- tion segment of the industrial economy will fnspire confidence in the hesitating durable goods-min- ing-transportation group, or the effect will be the other way around. Secretary of Commerce Weeks and Secretary of Labor Mitchell said in a joint statement the over- all employment-unemployment im- provement was largely seasonal, but represented the first sizeable gain “since the start of the em- ployment downturn last summer.” A three - inch pencil stub which George Washington used in making land surveys on the Ohio River was exhibited at the Centennial Exhibition in New York in 1889.
