The Conchs gained the 4-1 triumph behind the three hit twirling of mainstay George Lastres. The loss was the first for the visitors in four starts this season. Only time they threaten- ed was in the first inning when Dick Howser opened the ballgame with a boom- ing triple. He scampered home moments later when his brother Tom poked out a clutch single. It was their only run when Lastres tight- ened in the seventh inning. Lastres fanned five and walked two in racking up his second win of the sea- son, The Conchs tied up the contest fn the second frame when Julio Henriquez singled and was pushed on to second base when Lastres walked, Then outfielder Hal Solo- mon picked up his first base hit of the campaign to send Henri- quez in with the winning run. Lastres continued to mow down the Wildcats and the big three run fifth inning supplied the clincher after the Conchs hau loaded the bases in the third inning but failed to score. In the fifth West Palm hurler Jim Hooks went to pieces and walked Eloy Rodriguez and Julio Santana. He was lifted and Char- ley Whorley went into the fray. Whorley managed to retire two batters before Julio Henriquez came through with a clutch single that scored both Rodriquez and Santana, Lastres drew a free pass and Solomon sent a sizzling ground ball down the first base line. How- ser fielded it but pitcher Whorley bobbled the throw and Solomon was safe while Henriquez sped all the way in to score on the play. The loss was charged to Hooks, his first of the year. Solomon and Henriquez, with two safeties each, led the Conchs at the plate. Solomon also con- tributed a defensive gem when he took Howser’s line drive in the sixth inning on the dead run. The Conchs will go back into action here next Thursday with a two game series with the Coral Gables nine.
