A Leader Answers Questions About Brownies And What They Do What is a Brownie? Well, Brownie can be’ a number of| things. Sometimes a Brownie is a) sort of chocolate cookie, or a naughty elf, or a helpful household | sprite, but usually a Brownie is a} Girl Scout. Brownie Scouts are little girls | from seven to ten years of age. | They have their own Brownie pro- mise, salute and sign and uniform. The Brownie promise® ‘goes like | this, “I promise to do my best to} love God and my country; to help other people at all times, especial-| ly those at home.” | A Brownie Scout tries to help) out at home and when mother wonders “Who put away those clothes,” or “who cleaned up the} yard,” ‘the Brownie who lives at} her house doesn’t say a word. She just smiles and feels real good in- side. In troop meetings, Brownies learn to salute the American Flag; | they learn the pledge of Allegi-| ance, and they learn how to have | a flag ceremony, with color guards | and ‘flag bearers. And Brownies all learn the Girl Scout Laws. Brownies are registered with the national Girl Scout organization and each troop has a number, just like a Girl Scout troop. They have leaders and a troop commit- tee to help their leaders. Some! Brownie troops have a troop flag, and all Brownie troops have an American Flag. At Brownie meeting, they learn games; they learn songs, and they learn how to get along with the other girls in their troop. Brownies learn to sew, they Bearn a little about cooking, and they learn how to act when they eppear in public. When they have troop parties for their mothers and fathers, Brownies usually have a progr. end exhibit some of the things they have made. Sometimes their leaders take the Brownies. on picnics and hikes, All Brownies look forward to Being ten years old and “flying wep” to Girl Scouts. Fawtu All Hands Picnic Held Last Friday At Base The officers and men of the Fleet All Weather Training Unit, Atlantic flocked to Flagg Field, Seaplane Base for an All Hands Picnic last Friday, The party officially commenced at 11 a. m. and horseshoe pitch- ing, softball and volleyball put an edge on the appetities of the more energetic squadron members. Hamburgers and hot dogs topped a menu which also included baked beans, pickles and relish, olives, onions and. beverages, Contests such as a Sack race, a three-legged race, and a golf pitching contest, among others, tested the athletic skills and agili- ty of the contestants and highlight- ed the afternoon’s program. A Those who shunned such strenu- ous activities participated in the contest to guess the number of beans in a glass jar. Also there was a dart throwing contest, the target being an 11” by 16” photo- graph of the FAWTU Chief-Mas- ter-at-Arms. This proved to be one of the most popular activities, Lighters, cigarets, credit cards, and an electric razor were the prizes awarded to the winners of the events, The party secured at 6 p. m. and although the next day un- doubtedly found many with ach- ing muscles, it is felt that a good time was had by all, ee E. A most interesting and unusual program was conducted by Chairmen Virginia Whitmarsh and Edith Lopez. Program was one of “Matching Wits” and the subject “Resolved that men have made a greater contribution to world progress than women.” This question was debated by Gwen James and Ida Gell- rich (pinch hitting for Florence Rabon who was ill) who took the af- firmative and Ruby Dickerson and Libby Acheson arguing from the negative. Gwen confounded opponents with | a list of achievements and male| achievers enough to discourage | competition. Ruby launched into | an equally long list of women and | their accomplishments acknowled-| ging that men held most top posi-| tions but only because women had not yet gained entrance to the} same opportunities. Ida came back with an added number of} accomplishments by men in fields| Which will include several num- of science, religion, and the arts| and even in womans’ own field— that of cooking. Libby closed the debate with a good rebuttal, argu- ing her opponents’ points one by} one and closed by quoting a le- gend written by F. W. Bain which closed with the famous saying “What is to be done! For I can- not live either with her or without her.’”’ A panel of five judges chos- en from the members gave their vote three to two in favor of the negative.
