Cruickshank’s third ap- pearance in Key West as he presented the third of this season’s Audu- Unusual Antique bon Screen Tours, his color film “Below the Big Bend.” Cruickshank és the author of several books on nature including his latest “A Pocket Guide to the Birds,” ‘“‘Wings in the Wilderness” and has assisted his wife, Helen Cruickshank, also a writer, with her book “Flight Into Sunshine.” Since 1935, Mr. Cruickshank has been an official lecturer, photo- grapher, naturalist and camp in- structor for the National Audubon Society. His authentic and out- standing photographs of bird and animal life have appeared in many of the better known national mag- azines and his studio type photo- graphs have been exhibited in one- man shows throughout the countr; Mr. Cruickshank’s radiant perso ality and humorous comment a companying the film “Below the Big Bend” was reflected in the en- thusiasm of his appreciative audi- ence. The film depicted the 1000 equate miles of the new Big Bend National Park of Texas. Beginning with the Chisos or Ghost Moun- tains with mysterious clouds hover- ing about their summits he soon introduced a flash of the Brown Towhee and the humorous antics of several of the brightly colored Scrub Jays as they finally suc- ceeded in breaking open peanut shells which had been nailed to a | One of the most awe-inspiring se- quences of the film was that show- jing the descent into and the climb |up from Saint Elena Canyon of the 'Rio Grande where 1500 foot sheer} | cliffs of brightly colored stone tower above the very narrow can- yon and where the ravens nest on the ledges. f | Unforgettable was the risky trip Bat Cave—a huge hole in the round—inhabited by uncounted \filming of these creatures pouring \from the cave in a steady stream which darkened the sky as they came forth about 4:30 each after- jnoon in search of insects. Some- |times, Mr. Cruickshank said, these} flights of Mexican Bats last for as long as three or four hours, | A particularly beautiful scene was that of an exquisite rainbow |which lasted for over two hours over the Chisos Range, Others in- jcluded many varieties of desert |flowers, a scene of a redwing at- jtacking and driving a hawk away jthousands of bats, and the exciting) log to attract them within range of/from its nesting area, Reddish the movie camera.
