Poge § THE KEY WEST CITIZEN Tuesday, February 23, 1954 54—_For Rent— HOLLYWOOD NOTES By BOB THOMAS HOLLYWOOD \#—Clyde Beatty \s bringing back a venerable but laded American institution—the cir- tus parade. Many Americans can remember the thrill of sitting on a curb and watching the wonderland of the| circus march down the main street of town. Im the past decade or) two, that experience has been de- nied youngsters. “We haven't had a parade for 12) years,” said Beatty, circus opera- tor and greatest of the wild animal trainers. “But this year we're go- ing to try it. I got the idea when we staged a parade while we were) filming ‘Ring of Fear’ in Tucson. The people seemed to live it. “T’ve got some old circus wagons at our winter quafters in Deming, N. M., and I'm getting them out, and painting them. We'll pull them with our jeeps or arrange for! trucks in each town. The rest of the show is well equipped for a parade, We have a calliope and! the animal cages have rubber) wheels, “Adding the parade will cost LEGAL NOTICE (CONTINTED) eee {iN THE COUNTY JUDGE'S COURT, ‘ iN AND FOR MONROE CoUNTY,|Picnic grounds. Beatty didn't say whether it would be his last year before the big cats, but he did! admit he was thinking about re- tiring. Although he looks much younger, he is 51 and says that) it will soon be time to quit. “I’m not ‘as fast as I used to be,” he admitted. “My wife has been putting the pressure on for me to get out of the ring. She'd like me to quit right now.” The trouble is in finding a succes- sor, Many brave souls have applied for the job, but none seems to! qualify. i “Most of them want to get right in the cage and go to work,” Beatty said. ‘You can never handle the animals that way. You have to work around them for a long time and get to know what they’re like, Each animal is different, just like humans; you must get to know their temperament and habits, “I was a cage boy for two years before I ever got to handle the animals, But kids today don’t want to bother with all that work. hey want to be stars right away.” Toddler Drowns TECUMSEH, Okla. ) — A 117- month-old boy played “follow the leader” with a flock of ducks yes- ig and the game cost him his fe. Mrs. Effie Boyle, mother of Don- ald Oliver Boyle, said she saw him following the ducks down to @ stock pond on the farm of Mr. wd Mrs. I. F. Cargill, grandpa- tents of the youngster.
