Servicemen’s Christian Center Furziases Old Lowe Home On Southard Center Will Move To New Location After Completion Of Some Repairs The Servicemen’s Christ- fan Center of Key West soon will move into new quarters at 620 Southard St., the old Steven C. Lowe home. A warranty deed on file in the office of County Clerk Earl Adams showr that Beulah Brantley Porter, wife of Dr. J. Y. Porter, M. D., sold the property to the Center for about $40,000. A building permit on file at City Hall was issued to the Center for $500 in repairs to the house. Harry Gregory, director of the Center, said the Center would move from its present location, 323 Whitehead St., to the new lo- cation in the near future, after the repairs had been completed. The old house, about 100 years old, is considered one of the finest examples of early Key West archi- tecture, The house is one and a half stor- ies—typical of Key West homes of 100 years ago. It has a captain’s lookout on the top. At one time, so the story goes, there was a room with 12 win- dows atop teh house. In the cen- | ter of the room was mounted e big brass telescope. It was through this glass that Capt. Lowe watched for wrecks on the reef. The interior of the house is de- corated with hand-made moldings and the bannister has hand-turned es. To help the Center—a non-pro- fit organization — off to a good start, Max Siegel, owner of The Warehouse Furnityre Outlet—has donated a drop-leaf table with four chairs, a couch with match- ing chairs, several floor lamps, extra tables and a mirror, Other deeds on file this week included the following: Gloriana M.
