The General believes the press of the country, in using such terms as Army “brass” and playing up inci- dents which are regrettable but sometimes necessary, un- dermines the safety of the country. Said he: “Those tactics make it impossible to run an army the way it should be run.” Ever since World War II, and even during the lat- ter years of that war it has been fashionable among some circles to attack all military officers as “high brass.” Many of those doing the criticizing have never been called on to perform the job required of a military| officer and therefore are limited in their appraisals. Moreover, most of these people are quite willing for the “high brass” to defend and save the country in war timé. In the United States the military profession has never been a large one. On the other hand military ser- vice has not been frowned upon and many of the na- tion’s greatest men have devoted their lives to military service. While it is wise for us in this country to restrict the authority of the military at the highest level of government it is also wise to recognize the high calling of a military career. Without attempting to pass judgment on the Camp Carson affair, we can agree with the assertion that a general condemnation of military brass is inappropriate. Contrary to some people’s ideas, the officers of the military services are usually deserving men and women and usually effective leaders of men or qualified spe- cialists, ‘Seaman Practices For Depression BALTIMORE (#—Walter Hallett, 43-year-old seaman charged with begging in the streets, told Magis- trate William F, Laukaitis Sun day he was “just keeping in prac-- tice in case of a depression.” Laukaitis dismissed the charge after Hallett proved visible means of support. He urged the seaman to “just stay in the habit of work- ing.” “Besides,” said the Republican {magistrate, “a man that happens to be president just said the other day that all this depression talk is untrue.” PEOPLE’S FORUM The Citizen welcomes expressions of the views of its read- ers, but the editor reserves the right to delete any items which are considered libelous or unwarranted. BOWSER ANSWERED Editor, The Citizen: I could not resist a reply to Mrs. Bowser’s pub- lished poem. The following is the effort of an amateur but sincere writer of verse: We’re here, n the northland, that frozen pond Eden of ice and snow, But stay? Not for a minute, if back to Key West we could go! There’s not any measure for the kind of pleasure we get when our mailman rings; It means The Citizen, our favorite paper, and all the news it brings. ’Tis first we scan the weather report, and sigh for the bliss we once knew, Here we are freezing, while you’re sunning and swimming in your magnificent ocean of blue! We’re two old Northerners who lived like Conchs for three very short years. If ever again we can return to your isle, that sub tropical Paradise, You'll hear no regrets when we arrived and de-ice!
