SOCIETY — PERSONALS — NEWS OF INTERES. TO WOMEN SUE. JONES, Editor Mickey Renna Is Tuesday, February 9, 1954 THE KEY WEST CITIZEN Page 3 Glamorous Witch \Gillian And Elizabeth In New Play Time-honored notions about wit- ches being fiendish hideous crea- tures with such trappings as broom sticks, black cats and pumpkins, were discarded by Jobn van Dru- ten when he wrote “Bell, Book and Candie,” the Broadway comedy hit to be presented by the Key West Players at the Barn Theatre starting Feb. 15. For modern au- diences, van Druten decided to con- jure up modern witches, and hi is therefore inhabited with speli-binders that really “belong” in the 20th century. “Times have changed,” the play-' wright says by way of explanation. “The horse and buggy have gone, to be replaced first by the auto-~ mobile, then the airplane and shortly, the jet. It seems to mr that witches would have changed 00.” ‘The leading sorceress in “Bell,. Book and Candle” is Gillian, a gla- morous witch to be played here by Mickey Renna. She is young and alluring and lives in a well-furnish. ed New York apartment, keeping her talents at witching a well-kept secret from her neighbors. Witches ‘were not recognizable as such in the old days, and van Druten feels that their present-day counterparts deserve the same privacy. Although she has no broomstick for night flying, Gillian does keep a cat, the only witching symbol that links her to her mythological fore- bears. The cat is of course not anachronistic, .since people still employ them as pets to a large ex- tent today. Even Gillian’s “‘fami- Mar,” or witch’s pet, has been modernized, however. He’ is not black and diabolic, but a cheerful Biamese who mews contentedly and never hisses or arches his back. To make’ other changes as au- thentic as possible, the playwright selected details from the witch trials of history, including those of ‘New England, and brought them up to date, Thus, there is a prank-' fish nature to the magic indulged fm by the family of sorcerers in “Bell, Book and Candle,” Instead ef tormenting enemies by incanta-| tions, one male witch in the play gives them sleepless nights by eausing their phones to ring mys- teriously at all hours. One of his colleagues, though merely a bush league witch, at least knows how to get into locked rooms without a The conjuring and spookery in “Bell, Book and Candle” puts the accents on comic aspects rather than evil ones. The most potent ‘weapon employed by witch Gillian 4s love. Its use ultimately destroys her powers in sorcery, proving that Love, obviously, has a magic of its own so mighty that even a witch succumbs under its spell.
