This editorial was suggested to The Citizen by this ' question, asked by a tourist: “What has become of Key ‘West's once-famous cigars?” The tourist added that he had asked for Key West cigars in several stores and had been unable to buy any. It may be said that our present cigar factories are ‘what is called “buckeyes” by cigarmakers. A century ago} the cigar factories we had came under that trade desig- nation, but the producers then and their successors were go-getters. They were not satisfied to stay in the same | groove. Their objective was to increase their output, and . they didn’t let up in their determination to increase it. The result was that Key West eventually manufactured more cigars, made of Cuban tobacco, than any other city in the world, not excepting Havana itself. At one time .
