By RICHARD O’REGAN BUDAPEST, Hungary (#—The conflict of capitalism and commu- nism has brought tragedy to the} Jews of Hungary. By closing down row after row | of small stores, communism has created a new ghetto of the once | thriving Jewish quarter of Buda- pest. Small merchants and traders whose business independence was their faith and their existence to- day are old men whose shops are tombstones to their broken lives and hopes. Thousands of Christian businessmen suffer similarly. But a deeper tragedy than the drab, crumbling streets is the divi- sion of the Jewish community. On the one side are the Com- munists of Jewish origin, a few hundred led by Premier Matyas Rakosi, who rule Jew and Chris- tian alike, wield power compar- able to the Kremlin and live in isolated luxury.
