Key Westers To , Seek Southern District Title The Key West Conchs will geek to add to their laurels which are already consid- erable, Tuesday afternoon when they tackle Parrish High of Selma, Alabama, in their first start in a try for the Southeastern District Baseball Championship there, The battle is slated to get underway at 7:30 p.m. (6:30 in Selma). A top crowd is expected to jam Selma’s Bloch Field for the tourney, which will see the best in high school dia- mond talent from all over the south vying for the crown, Key West ranks as some- thing of an underdog in the meet, if.only on the basis of its enrollment. The Key West High School has an enroll- ment of but 240 boys while they will be going up against schools with enrollments of up to 4,000 students to pick from. But the Conchs showed that they are not afraid of the best of them when they walloped some pretty big schools in the Florida State tourney last week. The squad held drills yes- terday at Florida State Uni- veristy in Tallahassee and will journey to Selma today to rest up in preparation for their crucial first start in the sudden-death tourney. Otis Carey Wins ‘Round Island’ Race Sunday # The Key West Outboard Club sponsored “round the island race” Sunday was a huge success with the weatherman’s approval. Otis Carey and Raymond Ma- Toney won the “C” class by circling the island in the shortest time, 29 minutes and 41 seconds. The, “B” class was again taken by Cecil Cates in his flying Blue Streak with a time of 34:05. Joe Sawyer rode as his mechanic, Four members of the Marathon Yacht Club trailered to Key West for the event with Joe Felton tak- ing second place in the “B” class. “Second and third place in the “C” class were taken by Cliff Shumacher Jimmy Hanson, Other ST Ants in the race were Chet Tingler, Cliff Bailey, Phil Saunders of Marathon and Ben Schoneck, Bill Porter and Emil Sawyer. Prizes were donated by Saun- ders Wholesale and Monroe Beer Distributors. The Shriners held a 3-1 lead go- ing into the last of the. sixth, but with one out, Sam Holland doubled to right fie'd. Joe Brennan’s sin- gle scored Holland and then Rich- ard Bonner tied it up with another double to right. Jonuny Parks, the next hitter, bounced to pitcher Bil- ly Vaughn who threw wild to third base, allowing Bonner to score the winning run. It was a heartbreaker for the Shriners who were seeking their first win of the season. The Elks drew first blood in the fourth when they scored their first run on Bill Solomon's first homer of the season. The Shriners tied it up in the fourth om an error, a fielders choice ané a double steal. They took the lead in the fifth when Bobby Santana, Elke righthander lost his control and walked three men, A wild pitch follewed and the Shriners led 2-1, In the sixth in- ning, after two men were out, Ray Morales broke Santana’s hitless spell with a single to right field. Another single by Everett, Rob- erts plus a wild pitch gave the Shriners a run. Solomon led the Elks attack with a homer and sin- gle in three official tries. When Solomon grounded to third in the fifth, it broke his consécutive safe hitting at six tries. He had hit three doubles, two singles and a homer during ‘nis streak. Santana, who gained his first win. of the season, struck out eight and walked nine. Vaughn, who was charged with his sixth loss, struck out eight and walked only one. In the nighteap, the VFW knock- ed the Lions from first place by scoring five runs in the fifth inning to come from behind and take a 12-9 victory. Sailing for the first time under adjusted time handicap rules the boats were well bunched at the finish line. In the first race Bob Zimmer- man was second in his Rhodes Bantam; W. R. Bean third with his sloop; and Bill Fuller brought the Sailfish across for fourth place. The second race was the same order with the exception that Fuller and Beon reversed places. Tentative plans are for a full day of racing the Fourth of July with perhaps a picnic dinner at neon. Final plans will be an- mounced later. Post 168 Keeps Baseball Lead The American Legion Post 168 won out last night over the Key West Insurance Co. nine in the American Legion Junior Baseball loop at the Wickers Field Stadium. The Legion boys retained first place by virtue of their efforts with the final score 22-11. Higgs started on the mound for the Insurance nine and had the Le- gion whipped by a 9-3 score in four innings, but in the fifth, he explod- ed and eight runs were scored off his delivery and he went to the showers with Thompson relieving to allow 10 runs.
