The fans who have swarmed over the rolling 6,916 yards of the Oakmont Country Club course stopped wondering whether anyone could break 300 on its fearsome hills and turned to discussing whether Hogan could maintain his | sub-par pace against the three- way threat. It was very much like any other Open—remarkably like last year’s tournament at Dallas when Bed faded at the finish and big Julius Boros came from four strokes back to win. Hogan yesterday added an even par 72 to his opening 67 for a 139 total. At Northwood in 1952-it was 138, The two-stroke margin was the same and even one of his closest pursuers was the same. Fazio, a restless, 40-year-old play- ing pro for the Pine Valley Club at Clementon, N. J., was second to Ben at the halfway point last year and he didn’t.drop out until the last nine holes.
