NEBLETT, Attorney for Plaintiff, ges Duval Street, ey West, Florida. . 7 may18-25;jun1-8,1953 LIFE ABROAD By JAMES M. LONG ROME #—The new political par- ty that promises Italians a pound of steak a day has widened its program to pledge: no taxes, triple pay and a 30-hour school year. There are other embellishments: free money, a four-hour work day, no jails, no more studying history, Greek or Latin. Chubby Corrado Tedeschi, Flor- ence economics professor, started his “‘beefsteak party” as a joke, but now is stumping seriously for election to the Chamber of Depu- ties, heading a list whose symbol is a galloping baby beef. In Rome he packed the Piazzo de! Popolo with one of the biggest— and noisiest—crowds of the cam- paign for June 7 elections. “Bi-stec-ca,"" the crowd yelled. “Bring on the veal.” “Now hold your horses,” the pro- fessor warned. “All this can’t be done overnight, But I’m a profes- sor of finance. My program is scientific.” “Okay professor,” someone cried. “We can wait for the pound of beef. W settle for half a pound—now. “Now look,” the professor brushed on, “Russia could easily supply the world with grain for bread...” “Ship it here, we'll eat it,” one outed, “America,” the professor con- tinued unabashed, ‘‘could supply the whole world with its beef...” “What about the money?” “Just hold ,on,” oe eee candidate responded. w must do is build hotels, hotels, ho- tels. Then the whole world will come here to enjoy life, take things easy and eat well. And that's where the money comes in. They'll spend it here. Then we can buy Russian wheat and American beef and .. .” “And American wives,” some- one added happily. “Say,” said the professor “aren't some of these interruptions a bit silly? Now, where were we?” VA Budget Cu To Be Aired In House This Week WASHINGTON ~The possible effect of budget cuts on veterans’ hospital and medical programs is due for a trorough airing in the House this week. There have been reports that a 279 million dollar slash in funds requested by former President Truman for the Veterans Admin- istration would mean closing of six or more hospitals. The V.A., however, has said new hospitals may replace old ones in the fiseal year starting July 1, but no hospitals will be closed as a result of budget cuts. The House Veterans Committee has summoned VA. officials be- fore it Wednesday for questioning on the reports. The House appropriations sub- committee handling V. A. funds is scheduled to meet Friday for final action, Subcommitete Chairman Phillips (R-Calif) declined to com- ment on reports that some medical care funds may be restored. Bloody Battles Tanks, Artillery Smash Bunkers In End-Of-Month Blasts By FORREST EDWARDS SEOUL #®—Driving rain lashed Korean battle lines today in the quietest predawn in 20 days. In sharp contrast to last week's bloody battles, action was limited to patrol-sized jabs. Meanwhile, the Air Force said it lost only one Sabre jet to Red MIGs in May air battles, in which 55 Communist jets were destroyed, but 16 others were lost to ground fire and various causes. Far East Air Forces headquar- ters, in its montaly air summary said three Thunderjets, one B26 twin-engine bomber, one mosquito observation plane and one Marine AU fighter-bomber were shot down by Communist groundfire. Two Thunderjets, one F94 Starfire night fighter, five Sabres, one Australian Meteor jet and onc Marine AU fighter were lost to “other causes,” probably engine trouble. The 55 MIs shot down by Amer ican Sabres missed by eight the record 63 destroyed in September, 1952, Allied soldiers tossed back six minor Communist probes Sunday night and Monday morning. They raided Communist lines in two places and fought 16 small patrol battles in the no-man’s land be- tweén the lines. Although the weather curtalled air strikes, .18 B26s bombed Com-, munist front-line positions by ra- dar. Six B29 Superforts struck two Communist storage installations near Wonsan on the east coast. American and British Common- wealth warships continued bom- barding of Communist supply facil- ities on the east and west coasts Monday. Allied artillery and mortars Sun- day killed and wounded 95 af .350 Chinese Communists milling about Vegas, outpost on the Western Front, which the Reds captured in a big attack last week. Allied tanks, firing from fixed positions and U. N. artillery and aged 1,039 bunkers, 99 caves, 595 weapons positions, 159 forward po- sitions, 14 tunnels, 2,655 y: trench, 29 sniper positions, searchlight, a bridge, and ff three secondary explosions, dicating hits on ammunition plies, Hydrogen Bomb Plant Plans Are Found In Auto TSBs iste PE fs : 3 H el B R3 3 § i PATEL: ae Essa Le tf F i
