Brooklyn Dodgers Whip Chicago Cubs For Fourth Straight Victory On Friday Joy Mounis In Flatbush As Bums Assume N.L. Lead By BEN PHLEGAR Associated Press Sportswriter Bhades of '5S2. Those nasty Brooklyn bums are fattening up on the pore little second division teams again. The terrors of Flatbush won the National League pennant last year by feasting on the last four teams. And today, after a 10 day absence, they're back in first place after @ strict diet of the lower placed teams. The Dodgers won their fourth straight last night, a 6-5 uphill battle with the fifth place Chicago Cubs. Prior to that they had won three straight from the last place Cincinnati Reds. And of their ear- er victories three came over the seventh place New York Giants and three over the sixth place Pittsburgh Pirates. On their only ventures against first division opposition, the Bums got spanked three times running by the Philadelphia Phillies. Last year. Brooklyn won 67 games and lost only 20 against the four second division clubs. It had a poor 29-37 record with the three other first division outfits. Last night’s Brooklyn star was Pee Wee Reese who connected with a Dutch Leonard knuckleball in the eighth inning and drilled it into the lower leftfield seats at Ebbets Field «with a runner on base. Russ Meyer picked up the Brooklyn victory which, combined with a 5-2 loss by the Phillies to Milwaukee, put the Dodgers in first place. :In other National League action the Pittsburgh Pirates won their third in a row at the expense of Cincinnati, 8-3, and the St. Louis Carllinals edged New York, 3-2. The Athletics poked three of Ned Garver’s flutterballs into the Briggs Stadium seats but each of the drives—by Eddie Joost, Gus ernial and Cass Michaels—came with the bases empty. The victory was the first-this year for Garver who had lost three. Vic Wertz homered with two men aboard as St. Louis scored four times in the first inning against Washington. But ‘Wertz was one of the three Brownies who fanned with the bases loaded and St. Louis trailing hy a run. in the ninth. Trailing 5-1 after six innings the Yankees rallied for a pair of runs in the seventh, two more in the eighth. and filled the bases with one out in the rinth before Saul Rogovin came in to strike out Yogi Berra and get Billy Martin on a sinking liner to right field. Paul Pettit, Pittsburgh’s $100,000 bonus baby of 1950, paid his first major league dividend as he got credit for the victory over ‘Cin- cinnati. He needed help from John- ny Hetki in the seventh and Murry Dickson came on in the ninth but it was Pettit’s game, his first de- cisio. Pete Castiglione homered twice for the Pirates. The fast fading Phillies, who now have lost four and tied one in their last five starts, were held at bay by hthander Jim wilson who contrifated a home run to the 10-hit Milwaukee attack. Joe Ad- cock and Andy Pafko also hom- ered for the Braves. The Cardinals continued their unbeaten tour of the East at the expense of Dave Kosio. The Giants had one bad inning, the third, when the Red Birds put together -| four singles after two were out to score three runs—all Gerry Staley needed to register his second vic- tory. The New York runs came on a second inning homer by Al Dark. ‘THE KEY WEST CITIZEN , Saturday, May 2, 1953 _ Southernmost Yacht Brokers WERE IN BUSINESS! 4 \ MAY SPECIALS 48 Ft.
