Thursday, April 9, 1953 “Operation Key THE KEY WEST CITIZEN Page 7 West” Offered ‘As Solution To Augusta’s White House Press Problem Move Key West To Augusta For Week Of Ike’s Golfing Vacation BY SUSAN MCAVOY The Augusta Chamber of Com- merce called our Key West Cham- ber last week to find out the secret of our success in enter- taining the White House corres- pondents who accompany Presi- dent Eisenhower to that town when he arrives for his golfing vaca- tions. t Today Augustans are once more wracking their brains on how to simulate Key West conditions so that the boys will be happy next week when “Ike” comes down Monday for at least a week’s stay. Now we can’t move Key West’s entire population up to Augusta for the week to provide the yearn- ed for atmosphere for the news- men, but we do have some sug- THIS IS TOTAL WAR AT ALL STORES | BE RID OF BUGS TOMORROW Distributed by Key West Provision Co. gestions that the Augusta Cham- ber might act on. Let’s ‘call it “Operation Key West.” Why not for the period of “Ike's” and the White House newsmen’s stay In Augusta transplant the Key West per- sons and qualities that made our Island so popular for five years with some of the top newsmen? For example, the newsmen lik- ed our dinner parties, informal, as well as formal. Why not send some of these hostesses up to Augusta for the week so that they can put on the inimitable parties for which the scribes loved them. The White House press loved Duval Street’s niteries. Now Broad Street in Augusta is a dif- ferent kind of Main Street, and as I remember it had none of the atmosphere of our main drag. But to please the White House press, why couldn’t local bistro owners move up to August for the week, taking their bars, neon lights, and the late lamented B girls with them. Though an act of the Geor- gia legislature might be necessary to permit the sale of drinks, and at Key West hours, the newsmen would have the atmosphere they love so well, Still a third suggestion for the Augustan hosts of the White House press: Though the Southern city lacks our ocean, our beach and tropical scenery, our Casa Marina, and our beach clubs, for a small fee the city fathers might be will- ing to set up a cross section of our marine attractions, including even a charter boat on the hill in Augusta or down near the Rich- mond Hotel. Finally, but of great importance | to the enjoyment of White House press corps, our bathing beauties whose decorative appearance on beaches and street in tropical at- tire, brightened the corner wher- e’er they were. The gals all shed such tears when the newsmen departed last year, that they would probably, if invited by Augusta’s Chamber, be glad to drive their own cars up, or even hitchhike to the Georgia town to provide just the right at- mosphere for the newsmen. So, Augustans, if you really want to serve up Key West hos- pitality in the Key West manner to the White House press next week, just follow these sugges- tions, and the boys, whether they are , UP, INS, New York Times, Tribune, News, or even Reuters, will perhaps make your dateline as famous throughout the world, as ours has. become in the five years of ex-President Tru- man’s visitations. - Allen Assigned To Infantry Diy.
