Page 8 ‘THE KEY WEST CIT! 1ZEN Wednesday, April 8, 1953 Taft Predicts Eisenhower Will Run Again In 1956 By JACK BELL WASHINGTON (@ — Sen. Taft (R-Ohio) predicted today that President Eisenhower will. run again in 1956 and be re-elected. Persistent, although unverified, reports have circulated in Wash- ington that Eisenhower wants only one term. He told a news confer- ence Feb. 25 he had probably made as many facetious remarks on the subject as his friends could bear and wasn’t ready for a ser- a e Senate majority leader, said in an interview he never Hf heard any one-term suggestion from the President or his inti- mates. Taft said that in any event he firmly believes Eisenhower will be convinced he ought to seek a second term when the time comes. “It will be inevitable that the Pressure will build up on him from within the party,” Taft said, “When the party has a man in the White House the pressure always builds up to keep him ‘When the time comes, the Pres- ident will be ‘old that only by running again ean he prevent a split-in the party and make sure vf, its success at the polls.” ‘aft’s comment came after he had agreed, evidently somewhat Teluctantly, to the choice of for- mer Rep. Leonard W. Hall of New York as. Republican ‘national chair- man—a selection expected to be ratified by the national committee here Friday. : It is an open secret among the Ohio senator’s intimates that Taft would have preferred a chairman less closely identified than Hall is with Gov. This would mean trimming a little over 6% billion dollars out of spending for the 12 months starting July 1 gM se by former President Truman. The CED said taxes should not be cut until economies to balance the budget have been devised. The CED is a national organiza- tion of businessmen and economists | formed after World War II to study the economy and government eco- nomic policies, and to make rec- ommendations. Apart from the discussions with Adenauer, the U. S. was reported to have worked out a new approach to the problem of Western Euro- pean defense, based on a long pull for 20 to 30 years, rather than preparing for a “crisis year.” Planning originally was aimed largely at readiness to meet a Soviet threat at a time when it was considered most likely.
