While the Conch bats- men were biasting out nine safeties, Lastres held the visitors hitless through the seventh inning when, with one out, centerfielder Ron Tyre singled. The Conchs jumped into the lead in the first frame with a single tally and were never in trouble thereafter. Dick Salgado started it off when he drew a pass in the first frame. Don Cruz’ smashing. dou- ble pushed him to third base and he crossed the platter moments later on a wild pitch. In the second frame, the Conchs added two more ,counters when leftfielder Engel let Bob Lastres’ fiyball get away from him with Julio Henriquez and Harold So- lomon occupying sécond 4nd third bases. Both runners romped home. Key West’s only earned runs came in the top of the sixth in-' ning as Bob Lastres blasted a double to left field to open the in- ning. Salgado lined a two bagger to left center, Don Cruz singled to center and Hal Solomon finish- ed off with a bingle to right field good or one base. Only time Redlands got any- thing near a rally underway was in the bottom of the seventh when Tyre spoiled Lastres’ per- fect game by beating out a slow grounder to third base. Don Cruz, with his big bat, paced the lo- cals at the plate with a scream- ing double and a single while Dick Salgado, Bob Lastres and Gibby Gates were big factors in the win. Bob Bunkett was the outstand- ing defensive player for the visit- ors. Tonight the same two clubs will go back at it in their second and final meeting at Wickers Field. Coach Paul Davis is expected to toss Don Cruz up against the visitors with Jerry Pita and Gib- by Gates in reserve. Cruz*has a 1-0 record to date having tossed a masterful four hitter against the tough Miami Beach club. He struck out seven men in that effort.
