The victory was doubly sweet for the locals when it avenged’a 19 point, early season defeat at the hands of the upstaters. Bob Sawyer, rangy Conch center, closed out his career in a blaze of glory when he dumped in 17 counters for the Conch cause and his two points from the foul line in the closing seconds of the game provided a cushion that made the fans breath easier when the visitors pull- ed, at one time in the wan- ing moments of the game, to within a single point of the Conchs who had dissi- pated a hefty 11 point cushion, Stu Logun was the man of the hour when he dominated the backboard play for the locals and dumped in a total of 11 points as well. Logun repeated- ly outjumped the taller opposi- tion and stole the ball to set up the Key West offense. But if anything won the ball- game, it was the Conch’s stamina on their defensive game which bottled up the highly touted Sam- my Sincore and held him to just 15 points for the evening. In the last start against the growers. Sin- core dumped in a total of 30 counters and he has been averag- ing 21 points per contest since. The Conchs were on the short end of a 10-9 score at the end of the initial period, but they came back to hold a healthy 29-22 kick- er at the half. The Conchs ‘pulled way ahead later but in the final period, the visitor turned on the steam and threatened to pull ahead. Gibby Gates, at this point dump- ed in six badly necded points to insure the Conch win and the fighting spirit of Julio Henriquez, Glynn Archer and Deck Salgado held the upstaters at bay. When the final whistle blew, the — were in possession of the The win insured a winning sea- son for the Conchs with eight wins in 15 starts. They will journey to Redlands on Thursday next for their first start in the district tourney against South Broward.
