By GAYLE TALBOT MESA, Ariz. -- As his 43rd birthday approaches, Emil (Dutch) Leonard, the eminent knuckleball- | er, is living himself into condition for what he expects to be another full season of duty in the Chicago Cubs Bullpen, The bald man is without much doubt the most remarkable physi- | * cal specimen in baseball today. His weight remains an almost unvary- ing 197 pounds right through the year, and his powerfully muscled legs might still pass for those of a college football star. “I’m not ever going to quit this | game,” the Dutchman insisted hap- pily as he cooled off from a hard session in the sun. “They'll have to cut this uniform off me. I'll never take it off as long as I still love to play this game.” Leonard, who reported to his first big league camp just 20 years ago this spring, saw action in a total of 45¢games last season. In the 67 innings he worked he yielded only 24 bases on balls while running up 37 strikeouts. “This relief work I really love,” he said. “I think maybe I get a bigger kick out of it than I ever did starting. It's a greater challenge to come in there when your team’s in trouble and try to outguess a good batter.” ‘Knowing it would please him, we asked Dutch if his fast ball was blazing in there with its customary velocity this spring. “It sure is,” he. exulted. “It's getting to be my best pitch, and I'm not joking either. The batters in our league think all they're go- ing to get from me is a knuckler and that's what they keep looking for. “While they're looking for it I just keep on hipping that fast one past them, and first thing they know they’re run out of strikes. Then. maybe T'll give the next! ! batter three or four knucklers in “a row, and they’re set up again | for the fast one.” If there is any one explanation | for the fact that he’s still i | drawing down a major league | s*lary at an age where the aver- eve o'teher has long ice retired | to run a bowling alley, Leonard | NN t lies in his legs. “1 started with good ones and | e kept them in shape,” he said, “Just before I came to the big leagues I was shoveling coal down in 2 maine. and there’s no better | way to build legs.
