To win the race, which was another in the series of stirring duels between these three dogs, the winner was} forced to equal the track mark at 31.3 seconds over the \ 5/16 mile distance previously held by Spittin’ Image and Jaden. Harry Markson of the Inter national Boxing Club said he ex- pects to get a cable early this morning from Jack Solomons, the London promoter, clearing the way for a Paddy Young-Ernie Durando match here March 27. Solgmons got iato the act be- cause Young had signed with him for a fight in London March 17 against Randy Turpin, the former world chamion. It was understocd here that Walter Cartier, a better than’aver- age New York middleweight, had been offered to Solomons: as a re- placement for Young. Durando match yesterday. Several hours later Solomons, in London, release Young from his contract. Then the IBC had another trans- atlantic conversation with Solo- mons and, Markson said, the London promoter agreed to send a cable this morning releasing Young. The new American tournament, which replaced an unworkable 11- man competion, calls for the win- ner of the Durando-Young battle to fight Carl (Bobo) Olson of San Francisco for the American title. When last heard from, Olson and his manager, Sid Flaherty, were violently opposed to this routine, claiming they already had a fight for the “world title’ with Turpin in London June 9. Solomons and Flaberty met sev- eral times while the British pro- moter was in this country last week. But since he has been home Solomons hasn’t said anything signed Olson. Olson has been told, indirectly but in strong terms, that he better give up any ideas of bypassing the American éliminations unless he wants to be bypassed right out of the title picture. Speaking at a New York boxing luncheon, yesterday, Abe Greene, com mer of ihe National Box- ing Association, threatened that the NBA, working with the New York State Boxing Commission, might recognize a fight between Turpin and Charles Humez of France for the world title if American fighters continue to set up “impossible barriers.” Here is the way the tournament probably will end up: Durando vs. Young at Madison Square Garden March 27. Olson vs. the Durando-Young winner somewhere outside New York in May. Turpin vs. Humez at London June 9 with Solomons claiming it as a “world title fight.” The Turpin-Humez winner vs. the remaining American at a New York ball park in September with everybody agreeing to call the winner the world champion.
