e PROUD PAPA DESI ARNAZ EXPLAINS COINCIDENCE OF SON'S BIRTH By BOB THOMAS HOLLYWOOD ® — Proud papa ep Arnaz today explained the ackground on one’of the happiest incidences in recent history—the irth of his and Lucille Ball’s son hn real life and on their television Bhow. The Arnaz family made the front ages last month when Lucille fre birth to Desiderio Alberto rnaz IV. That evening some 40 illion fans watched the “I Love ucy” show, on which the TV founterparts of Lucille and Desi ilso had a baby boy. “There was a lot of talk that we Nad spent some time guessing Whether to have a girl or boy on the show,” said Desi in his Cuban- linged English. ‘‘Also there were feports that we might have had Wwo endings to the show, one in EB ours was a girl and the other r a boy. “Actually, there was never any question about itf the baby on the thow wag going to be a boy. And lor an important personal reason. “That reason was Lucie, our faughter. Of course, she is too THE KEY WEST CITIZEN young (1%) now to know the dif- ference. But .if we stay on the air for three or four years, Lucie might. start wondering why she wasn’t portrayed on the show. We could tell her ‘Well, the part called for a boy; you’re-a girl.’ “But if we had made the baby on the show a girl, Lucie might have become jealous. When I told our producer, Jess Oppenheimer, about our decision he was happy about it. He said there were more come- dy possibilities with a boy than with a girl.” Desi wanted to clear up a mis- conception: that the Caesarean birth was planned and timed to jcoincide with the TV show. The \truth is that Lucille can have {babies only by Caesarean section, ‘and the timing was decreed by the doctor. The fame of their new son has amazed Lucille and Desi. They |m |have received about 1,000 tele- grams, 25,000 cards and letters and hundreds of gifts for the baby. They plan to donate all but the {personal presents to an orphanage. Among the gifts was an infant-size Saturday, February 7, 1953 St. Louis Browns uniform sent by Bill Veeck, operator of the ball club. “If the boy hows any possibili- ties at all, send him around this year,” said Veeck. “We're des- Perate.”” Radio Stations Can’t Protest TV WASHINGTON (P—A radio sta- tion has no right to protest against the introduction of television serv- ice in its area, the Federal Com- munications Commission has found. If such a protest were to be considered, the FCC said in a broad ruling yesterday, the views of “‘other advertising or entertain- ment media such as newspapers, magazines, local movie houses or skating rinks” would also have to be taken into account. The FCC decision dismissed a protest by radio station WGRD of Grand Rapids, Mich., against the commission’s grant to Leonard A. Versluis for a new TV station at Muskegon, about 35 miles away.
