‘Weamest City In Nation Today Was KEY WEST a° Che Everglades Expansion Flayed By Big Axelson Says U.S, Park Wants 226,000 Acres More In County Bitter opposition to exten- sion of Everglades National Park into the north section of Monroe county, was ex- pressed to The Citizen yes-| terday by Ivar Axelson, owner of 12,000 of those acres. Axelson came into the office armed with facts and figures he Presented to corroborate his posi- tion, namely that the U. S. Park Service is seeking. an additional 225,000 acres of Munroe County’s northern area on the mainland. “All that would be left of Mon- roe County on the mainiand would be 13,000 acres, if the Park Service goes ahead and con demns this land,” Axelson said. Axelson’s father-in-law owns 30,- 000 acres of the Monroe County Everglades land. Holding 42,000 to- tally, the two men are the largest owners of property on the main- land in the county. Joe Hopkins, who holds 30,000 is the second lar- gest.
