. Rodgers Says He Has No Yen To Write Long-Hair Music By BOB THOMAS . HOLLYWOOD (# — The millions who have loved the songs and shows of Richard Rodgers can rest assured that he will keep turning them out. He has no yen to write long-hair music, The famed composer was here to confer on “Main Street to Broad- way,” the film to raise funds for reviving the living theater in the U. S. When I saw him in his hotel suite, he appeared relieved that his own brief part in the picture had been completed. Unlike his partner, Oscar Hammerstein II, he has never yearned to be an actor. We discussed music, of course. I asked Rodgers if he harbored any ambitions to write more serious works, as George Gershwin did with his opera ‘Porgy and Bess” and symphonic compositions. “No,” he replied. “I am only interested in dramatic music; aca- demic music doesn’t intrigue me. I think it’s a little late for me to start now anyway. After all, I was 50 last June. “As for opéea, I think we have done some pretty serious work al- ready. ‘Carousel’ was as serious a subject as any. that has been treated on the musical stage; the soliloquy in it was certainly sol- emn. And there are similar mo- ments in ‘South Pacific’ and ‘The King and 1.’ . “As for opera, I think we have ‘Porgy and Bess’ is much better in the current version. It cuts out the operatic pretensions and welds the great songs into a good show.” The composer told about his one adventure into the long-hair field. About 12 years ago, he wrote the music for a ballet about a mining town. “Very | bad.” Right now he is busy as a bird- dog with a variety of projects. His shows are rung all ever the globe. ile no -um:osea *he score for the TV series, “Victory at Sea.’ (He proudly displays the | |medal the Navy Department gave him for his ervices; it’s the high- est civilian award.) After a desert vacation, he goes to St. Louis to conduct the symphony. But the big news along Broad- way is the new Rodgers and Ham- merstein show, “Me and Juliet.” It is a story about the people who work backstage in the theater. “The book is finished and a good many of the songs and lyrics are done,” Rodgers remarked. “It will ; open in Cleveland in April. Why Cleveland? That’s part of our cam- paign to revive the ‘road.’ We hope to increase interest in the theater by opening there. Then we'll play Hartford and Boston, according to tradition. We'll either have the show in shape and tzeke it into New York or else close it up.” .
