Sylvia Feels Hunger Pangs I'm beginning to think I’m not as popular with Sylvia Karnerer as I was on the day I approached her with the idea of changing her from a motherly size 18 to a glamourous 14 or 12, You see Sylvia has been feeling quite hungry, all the appe- tite reducing pills to the contrary. Well, live and learn, yow dieting lwomen, and Sylvia and I have learned together that she is better satistied with more variety in her eating. First of all we found that @ cupful of salad or vegetable is quite a little bit of food, but when you have only a hard cooked egg or a piece of meat and one vege- ‘table you feel both cheated and robbed. So we decided that if we gave a meal variety, dieting wasn’t as hard to put up with. Sylvia enjoyed yesterday’s menus much more, and I didn’t feel quite so much like slinking around in dark cor- mers every time she turned re- proachful eyes in my direction. For your especial benefit, here’s what Sylvia ate yesterday: Breakfast: five stewed prunes, made of course without any sweet- ening. The prunes supplied their own natural sugar. One glass of skimmed milk, and then guess what? Sylvia was too full for her cup of black coffee! She saved it ‘for later in the morning when she Rn, her first appetite reducing Lunch: One ‘small yellowtail broiled and ‘seasoned with Key Lime Juice. We used only a tiny bit of sal it. With this she had her whole cup of green magic ve- Betal ‘Wit she prepared it thus; One Youp of shredded lettuce for the id: (bearing. in mind that an‘tncooked vegeable is less fattening’than the cooked) and one half cup of cooked green peas, These were only lightly salted and had no butter. This was followed by a glass of iced coffee'with no sugar or cream. Sylvia said: she really felt satisfied after this meal. We had “tea” again yesterday afternoon. Sylvia’s tea of course consisted of just that plus her now | familiar sweet tablet. I snitched a graham cracker with mine, and I'll Probably weigh a half a pound more in the morning. I’m glad Sylvia is showing moral terpitude and also quite a bit of stamina. For dinner: We supplemented Ann Delafield’s recommended pro- tein with Turtle Steak. I couldn't find a mention of it anywhere in the Delafield book, and haven't the slightest idea how much protein it contains, but it certainly is a fat- free meat, and if Sylvia gains on it, a pox on me! Anyhow, the quar. ter pound slice of Turtle Meat was marinated in lime juice and garlic for several hours, and then broil- ed. The whole family had this as a meat course and it was enjoyed by all. We also had a delicious slaw containing mostly cabbage but with bits of carrot, cucumber and onion chopped into it, and we made it using saccarine instead of sugar and lime juice instead of vinegar. For a vegetable we served Aspar- agus, and Sylvia’s half-cup portion was set aside before we buttered the rest: She looked very longingly at the mashed potatoes swimming with butter and cream, and I told her I'd be very glad to try and de- termine the exact ratio of calories in a helping of potatoes or the dessert she was to have that night. She decided in favor of the dessert however, because she did have a nice plateful of food, and she thought it might be hard to sit by with a cup of cdifee when.we were having dessert. For dessert, we all had a lovely chocolate pudding. I made it with skim milk and fluffed it with egg white, completely leav- ing out the yolk when I mixed it with baker’s bitter sweet choco- late, sugar and cornstarch. It was very good, and Sylvia had a des- sert glass consisting of a small helping, minus the whipped cream of course. Then she almost forgot the all-important vitamin ‘pill, but her young son reminded her, so she took it. She said she didn’t know that there were any decis- ions to be made when dieting, that diets were rigid things with no de- viations, We have that it is a good thing to know to add, subtract and divide, when count- ing calories, and maybe we can make a good thing out of this. On reading Ann Delafield’s book, we find that Soya Beans and the flour are listed as non-fattening foods, so Sylvia is going to do a little research tomorrow for reci- pes using the Soya flour. Maybe she can find a new tummy-filler for some future menus. One thing I have discovered | about Dieters. They get in a rut! They seem to think of nothing but ood, and we will have to delve further in the Ann Delafield book and get Sylvia interested in other forms of self improvement so that her face, hair, and personality will be ready for the new figure as it progresses, Another thought just struck me: In trying to make life happier for Sylvia, and diets at our table eas- ier to bear, it might just be that we will fall into healthier eating habits ‘ourselves! It’s still not too late to get on the 'Delafield wagon and start your lown course today. Gardner's Rex- all Pharmacy at 1114 Truman Ave- {nue has the full Delafield Course, jor the supplementary Reducing | Pills and Vitarnins alone.
